Background
Early Life
Neway Debebe was born in Hamer Bako, from his father Debebe and his mother Zewditu Worku, and raised in Asela, Awassa, and Wolaita Sodo. Neway started music in a city called Asela at Ras Andarge high school, having a great contribution to the high school band. Besides singing in the high school band, he also contributed to giving melody and lyrics compositions to his peers. Teacher Fantahun Antalehegn, who used to be Neway’s music teacher, encouraged him to succeed in his talent; Neway says his teacher laid the foundation for what he has become.[1] [2]
Career
Having acquired a great deal of music experience playing from high school music group to social Kebele music in Asela and Wolaita Sodo. Neway evolved his talent to move to the capital city, Addis Ababa to make his dreams come true. He moved to Addis to join Ambassador Theatre, which was organized by Ato Tesfaye Lema, and following that he joined Ras Theatre’s traditional band and made Ras Theatre famous.[1]
In the 1970s, the first debut album of Neway was released. This album included great hit songs such as “Eshet Belahugn”, “Yetikimit Abeba”, “Egnaw Enitarek”, etc., which are still currently loved by the audience. Neway has released six studio albums, and collaborated with other artists in different albums; his works have afforded him great fame by the wide audience.[1][3]
Neway Debebe has been described as possessing a "voice of silk".[4] Neway’s musical career spans several decades. He composes melody and lyrics for himself and for his many professional colleagues, including Dr. Tilahun Gessesse. The songs are cleverly arranged. Sung mostly in his native Amharic, Neway’s music is wide and varied, from the traditional Ethiopian beats, rumba, reggae or garage, big band or Ethno-Jazz, calypso to Afro-pop. This array of musical styles has made Neway hugely popular outside of Ethiopia. [5] The ability he has in songwriting put him in a very top place in the Ethiopian music industry.[1] [2]
Neway has lived in the US for 20 years, making his life and work there; he also has performed his works in concerts around the world.[2] In his stays in the U.S., he continued to release his albums such as "Ageren Alresam", "Yene Deha" with musicians such as Abegaz Kibrework, Henok Temesgen, Fasil Wuhib with arrangement of Abegaz Kibrework. Finally, he moved to Ethiopia in Ethiopia's Millennium (2007 G.C).[1] "Already finished the new album and it’s on the way to release," he said in an interview with Seifu on EBS on December 27, 2020.[2]
Personal Life
He first married to Aida Hassen; they have a son and a daughter. On December 27, 2020, they officially announced their divorce. His appearance with the talk show host Seifu Fantahun on December 27, 2020, revealed the story of his marriage, which went viral and got the public talking. The good thing about Neway’s latest story is that it is seen in a positive light. He returned to Ethiopia after living in the United States for twenty years. His wife, from whom he has two children (all grown up), remained in the United States. And claimed that he waited for her for ten years before entering a second marriage with another woman. Neway has two sons from his new wife too. His first wife, Aida Hassen, still lives in the United States, appeared on Seifu Fantahun’s show with him. She was very strict when it comes to revealing if she is currently in a relationship. “I will skip that,” she told the host.[2] [6]
However, she revealed that she is very close not only to her former husband, Neway Debebe, but also to his new wife. She (the new wife) calls her "Enate.” It means "my mother." Aida and Neway's new wife meet every day via phone too. What is special about the story is that although they are divorced, they are still intimate. The fondness about one another is visible. A video of the two that was produced before ten years ago was released on December 27, 2020, and that too has gone viral. The song is entitled “Amen” – he praised God for giving him a woman like her.[6][2]
"Amen" is the song which is dedicated to his former wife, Aida. Neway also confirmed to his former wife, Aida; that there won't be a song like "Amen," which he expressed the love for here. Many artists and people also share this idea because of the power of the lyrics he made.[2]
