Nick Barua (ニック・バルア) (born March 13, 1980) is a British-born physicist, business executive, and educator based in Japan. He is the Chairman and CEO of AN Holdings Co. and formerly served as the Chief Operating Officer of Swift Xi Inc., a subsidiary of the American aerospace firm Swift Engineering. Barua is recognized for his work in integrating artificial intelligence with aerospace and automotive safety systems.
Early Life and Education
Barua was born in London and attended Eton College. He moved to the United States for his undergraduate studies, earning a Bachelor of Science in Physics from Yale University (2001). He subsequently obtained a Master of Science in Theoretical Physics from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).
In 2015, he completed his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Project Management from the University of Hertfordshire in the United Kingdom.
Career
Physics and Engineering
Barua began his career in research, serving as a physicist at the NASA Johnson Space Center. He also spent time as a member of the software development team at Microsoft in the United States. His research interests later shifted toward autonomous systems and sensor fusion.
Executive Leadership
- Swift Xi Inc.: Barua served as the COO of Swift Xi, a joint venture between Swift Engineering and the Kobe Institute of Computing. He played a primary role in deploying Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and VTOL technologies in the Japanese market.
- AN Holdings Co.: He is currently the Chairman and CEO of AN Holdings (formerly AN Inc.), a firm specializing in investment consulting, IT, and healthcare innovation.
