North Rocks Shopping Centre (formerly Westfield North Rocks) is a shopping centre in North Rocks, a suburb of Sydney, Australia.

History and development[edit]

Originally opened in 1975, it was acquired by the Westfield Group in 1982 and rebranded as Westfield North Rocks.[3]

The centre has a current catchment area of 114,660 persons, and retail spending in the catchment area estimated at A$1.3 billion (2006).[2] Annual turnover at the centre for 2006 was $102.2 million with 3.7 million visitors per year.[2]

By 2001, the centre had grown to 21,298 m2 (229,250 sq ft) with 89 retailers.[4]

The shopping centre went through a redevelopment[when?] which added branches of Aldi, The Reject Shop and other retailers.

Sale by Scentre Group to Challenger[edit]

In August 2015, after Westfield split off a subsidiary named Scentre Group in 2014 which owned this centre, Scentre announced that it planned to sell some of its smaller shopping centres to reduce debt.[5] Later that month, it announced it had finalised the sale of the centre to Challenger Limited for $127 Million. At the same time, )JLL were announced as the new managers for the centre.[6] In September 2015 it was rebranded as the North Rocks Shopping Centre.

2016 expansion plans[edit]

In April 2016 the NSW state government’s planning authority, the Joint Regional Planning Panel, approved plans for a $17.3m expansion of the North Rocks Shopping Centre, which will include the purchase of additional land from the Hills Shire Council, to give 11 per cent increase in floor space. The Panel also approved plans for Sydney's first 24x7 supermarket within the centre, although Coles which operates the supermarket had not yet committed to proceed with that option.[7]

Transport[edit]

The centre can be accessed by public transport via bus services operated by Sydney Buses and Hillsbus.[8]
