notwoways, also known simply as ntw, is a British footwear brand. Founded in 2020 in East London by English YouTuber Callum McGinley (known online as Callux) and Dutch-Surinamese footwear designer Rockwell "Rocky" Princely,[1] notwoways has been described as "affordable, sustainable and in-demand" by marketplace StockX.[2]

Since their launch, notwoways has released eight different shoes in various colourways and silhouettes, with their most recent release being "Just White", which launched in July 2022. The shoes can be distinguished by their aggressive design, unique outsole and recycled rope-style shoelaces. The company often has limited releases, with its first few launches selling out in seconds.

History[edit]

2020[edit]

In August 2020, notwoways released their debut sneaker "Exuberance" in the colourway "moonbeam/cool grey/exuberance/ice". The shoes consist of a leather, suede & mesh upper and phylon & rubber outsole.

Three months later, in November 2020, notwoways released their Autumn/Winter shoe "Moonless" in the colourway "black/moonbeam/exuberance/onyx".[3]

2021[edit]

The company's Spring/Summer release "Subsolar" launched in March 2021 in the colourway "beige/moonbeam/exuberance/clear fade" with a suede & mesh upper. This was notwoways' first release which included recycled rubber on the outsole. It took just 11 minutes for their 5,000-pair run to sell out completely.

In July 2021, notwoways released "Afterdark".[4] This was their first shoe to contain a knitted upper, which intersected with reflective components. The shoe's official colourway is "onyx black/reflective/exuberant orange/cloud white", and as well as knit, the shoe has a leather upper.

In November 2021, they launched "Saphfire", which has been described as the company's biggest step in terms of sustainability.[5] Released in the colourway "coastal blue/notwoways orange/sapphire/ice blue", the shoe is constructed from nubuck & suede upper.

Only a month later, in December 2021, the company released their last shoe of 2021, "Apricity".[6] The company's second knitted shoe, the colourway for the shoe is "exuberance orange/true white/jet black/ice blue" and it is composed of knit and leather.

2022[edit]

In February 2022, notwoways released "Syzygy" in "pure white/onyx black/notwoways orange/night grey". Limited to just 2,000 pairs,[7] "Syzygy" sold out within minutes.

In May 2022, the company launched "Lacuna", an all-black sneaker composed of nubuck and featuring a suede upper.

In June 2022, notwoways released "Sakura (CS)", also known simply as "Sakura", an all-pink (the official colourway is "cherry blossom/cherry blossom/candy pink/rose shadow") sample shoe. Described as "very limited" by the company, the pair retailed for £150, their highest retail price yet. Sakuras are composed of a vegan upper and a recycled phylon & rubber outsole. On 23 June, eleven days after their release, a pair of Sakuras resold for £877 on marketplace StockX.[8]

Just nine days after the release of "Sakura", the company posted a teaser on their social media platforms, promoting its next pair of shoes. The pair would later be revealed as "Just White",[9] their fourth Spring/Summer release of 2022, after "Syzygy", "Lacuna" and "Sakura". The pair was released in July 2022 in the colourway "pure white/london cloud/essential grey/arctic white" and was notwoways' first pair to be composed of premium full-grain leather.

A day before "Just White" went on sale, notwoways decided to release two custom pairs of the shoe, "Just White Custom", worn by co-founder Callum McGinley. Covered in orange, grey and black paint, the official colourway mostly the same with "ntw paint" being added.

On 31 July, to commemorate a year after Afterdark's release, notwoways held a week-long raffle with an updated retail price of £90, the company's lowest retail to date. Winners received an email containing a link to purchase the shoes.

In August 2022, notwoways announced NTW Day, an 8-hour long online event on 15 August with limited hourly restocks of notwoways' previous releases. The event started at 11:00 am BST and concluded at 6:00 pm BST.

On 15 August, just hours after NTW Day concluded, the company announced a pop-up store at Boxpark Shoreditch, which ran from 23 August to 3 September.[10] On 31 August, notwoways announced "Kaki", a store-exclusive pair limited to 100 pairs, each being sold with an individually numbered and signed card by co-founder Rockwell Princely. They went on sale the next day in-store. "Kaki" released online in November 2022.

In December, notwoways released "Floe", a light-blue (the official colourway is "ice blue") sneaker named after a sheet of floating ice.

Sustainability[edit]

Since notwoways was founded, one of its main focuses has been sustainability.

At the moment our shoes are about 70 percent sustainable, so imagine we can come out and say, “For the last year you’ve been wearing a sustainable shoe, it wasn’t that hard, was it?” There’s a lot of people out there shouting but aren’t doing much, but we’ve been doing it from the start.[11]

In March 2021, with their Spring/Summer release "Subsolar", notwoways started using recycled rubber on the outsole of their shoes.

In November 2021, alongside the release of "Saphfire", Hypebeast reported that notwoways have started using a new midsole partially formed by recycled bottle caps and thicker laces made from recycled fishing nets.[12]

In December 2022, with the launch of "Floe", notwoways stated that they used vegetable leather in the process of making the shoe. The company also affirmed that they used 100% recycled packaging.
