OkadaBooks is a digital publishing platform and online library based in Nigeria, which allows writers to bypass traditional publishers by publishing their stories and selling them by themselves.[1]
OkadaBooks leverages mobile technology, where authors can keep track of the number of copies sold of their books in real-time, and withdraw the money they've made. Users can access the content either via web, or the Okadabooks mobile app.[2][3]
History
OkadaBooks was founded by Okechukwu Ofili in 2013. OkadaBooks was created out of the founder's frustration with the system of the Nigerian book distribution network.[4]. The name OkadaBooks is a eulogy to how commercial motorcycles, commonly known as Okadas, avoid the hectic traffic on the streets of Nigeria. The idea is that OkadaBooks will bypass the obstacles most authors face, by helping them get their books directly to readers without the need of traditional publishing houses.[5]
Statistics
As of February 2019, OkadaBooks has over 270,000 registered authors and readers, an average of 2.5 million monthly page reads, over a million monthly page views on the website and 930,000 unique monthly users.[6]
Achievements
The company initiated the first ever Campus Writing Challenge sponsored by Union Bank of Nigeria in 2018.[7][8][9][10]
Other achievements of the company include:
- Selected for the first Google Launchpad Accelerator Africa[11]
- Partnership with Teach For Nigeria[12][13]
- Initiation of the annual APEN Short Story Contest for students in secondary schools[14]
- Listed as one of the 20 outstanding writers' platforms of 2018[15]
- Mentioned as one of 10 Best African Booksellers[16]
