On 6 July 2021, the Tigrayan government began mobilisation to retake western and southern Tigray from Amhara militias.[2]
TDF offensive started on 12 July 2021, resulting in Tigrayan forces capturing southern Tigray, including the towns of Alamata and Korem.[3] The TDF subsequently crossed the Tekezé River and advanced westward, capturing the town of Mai Tsebri and prompting Amhara officials to call on its militias to arm themselves and mobilise.[4]
