Paddy Shovlin (born 16 December 1963) is an Irish property developer.[1]

Career[edit]

Shovlin started out in the restaurant business. He owned a number of successful restaurants in Dublin before branching out in to property development by first developing The Morgan Hotel, as well as a business park in Clondalkin and an office block on Harcourt Street.[2] Shovlin ran Shiels on Dublin's Moore Street and also opened a second Shiels restaurant, two Blakes restaurants, Whites on the Green and Thunder Road Café in Temple Bar.[2]

He became a well-known property developer in Ireland during the boom.[3]

Shovlin led a group of investors that bought the Bank of Ireland headquarters on Baggot Street, Dublin, for €200 million.[4] He was a member of the consortium that developed the Beacon Private Hospital, in which he retained a shareholding.[5]

Shovlin's other developments included Beacon Court, Beacon Hotel and Beacon South Quarter, as well as a Gateway project that encompassed a five acre site nearby and brought the total value of the projects to €2 billion. [6]

Shovlin developed Kilcarberry Business Park and Westland Business Park, which won awards for its design. He also developed 'The Harcourt Building' in Dublin.[7]

Shovlin's company Landmark Enterprises encountered difficulties when the Irish economy collapsed. Through Landmark, Shovlin was involved in setting up children's museum, Imaginosity, which is run as a charity in Ireland.[8][9] A €6 million, 1,500sq m (16,000sq ft) building was given to the charity set up to run Imaginosity by Shovlin and others involved with Landmark. Renewable energy sources are used in the building and displayed for children to learn about when they visit.[10][11]

He was one of several Irish property tycoons who availed of UK bankruptcy in 2012 following the property crash in Ireland and he was given a clean bill of financial health in May 2013.[12][4] Shovlin owns 50% of Hayfield Homes Group. In 2017 Hayfield Homes completed a number of developments and also secured five sites. The company constructs upmarket and starter homes in Stratford-upon-Avon and Leamington Spa in the English Midlands.[13] Among developments by Hayfield is a new £1.5million Home Guard Club in Tiddington, which opened in April 2018. It was funded by Hayfield Homes, which is also behind a new 32-home development in the area.[14]

Shovlin is a director of Terra Strategic and the developments are located in a number of counties, including Wiltshire and Hertfordshire.[15][16]

In 2017, it was reported that Shovlin had teamed up with Mark Booth, who sold Banner Homes group to Cala for €225m, at Terra Strategic to develop 11 sites around the British Midlands.[17]

Personal life[edit]

Shovlin is married with children.

In 2012 Shovlin took part in a charity cycle race from Paris to Nice, which was to raise €1million for the Special Olympics and Cerebral Palsy Sports Ireland.[18]

Shovlin is an accomplished motor racing driver. In 2004, he won a European Motor Race at Germany's famous Nurburgring and was on the podium next to Formula One racing legend Michael Schumacher who was a guest of honor at the race.[19][20] In 2008, Shovlin and Michael Cullen won the 2008 Avon Tyres British GT Championship at Brands Hatch.[21]
