The Panjab University Rural Centre, Kauni (PURC Kauni) is situated at a distance of 30 KMs from Malout, 60 KMs from Dabwali and Abohar, 55 KMs from Gidderbaha, 30 KMs from Jallalabad and 28 KMs from Guru Har Shai. It is approachable by road and rail. The Panjab University Rural Centre, Kauni established at a remote village 'Kauni', Sri Muktsar Sahib is a brain-child of Professor R. C. Sobti, former Vice-Chancellor, Panjab University, Chandigarh. Since its inception in June 2010, the centre has been making its presence felt under the dynamic stewardship of Vice-Chancellor, Panjab University, Chandigarh.

Panjab University Rural Centre, Kauni has been established on approximately 20 acres of lush green eco-friendly environment to provide a 'pristine-like' atmosphere for the education of the rural students. Although, it is a challenge in itself to raise the level of education of the students from rural area. P. U. Rural Centre has successfully risen to the challenge. The institution has a very highly qualified and experienced faculty. The infrastructure is excellent. The building is spacious and there are big and airy classrooms. A new multi-crore state-of-the-art building is under construction to meet future requirements in academics, research and co-curricular activities.
