Paul Hlava Ceballos is an Ecuadorian-American[1] poet and text artist. His debut full-length book, banana [ ], won the Donald Hall Prize for Poetry, the Norma Farber First Book Award,[2] and was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award.[3]
Personal Life[edit]
Hlava Ceballos was born and raised in Southern California. He is an activist, focusing on labor activism,[4][5] and racial and migrant justice.[6] He currently works in echocardiography.
Works[edit]
Of Hlava Ceballos's prize-winning collection, banana [ ], Ilya Kaminsky wrote, "The invention and lyric textures in this book aren't here just for the show; they are setting to music the urgency of our time."[7]
The title poem and middle third of the book is a collage of texts that follows the history of banana agriculture in the Americas, about which The Seattle Times wrote, "Hlava Ceballos’s Banana [ ]...mines the historic record to tell a harrowing story of labor, exploitation, colonization and violence centering around the banana trade."[8]
An article in Yes! Magazine connects the banana trade to immigration, writing, "By combining disparate texts, Ceballos links intersecting histories: his own family’s with that of the banana trade in Latin America, European colonization in the Americas, and experiences of other immigrants in the United States. Who gets remembered and how, Ceballos seems to ask, and to what extent can subverting the language of colonization create new meanings, new histories, new pathways for remembering?"[9]
In an interview with the Poetry Foundation, Hlava Ceballos said, "I was very much writing about bananas, but I’m also not writing about bananas. I’m writing about resource extraction, and extractivism from us, the Global North, from the resource-rich Global South, and the relationship between us."[10]
Hlava Ceballos is also the co-author of Banana [ ]/we pilot the blood, a collaborative poetry and visual arts book that features Quenton Baker, Christina Sharpe, and Torkwase Dyson.[11]
