Paulo Leão is a Brazilian actor, writer and director of theatre, cinema and television awarded internationally for the films Happy Birthday, Good Night and I Miss You. Creator of the Teatro dos Sentidos (Theater of The Senses). Musician and composer of the instrumental album Nas Estrelas. As an actor he worked on TV Globo and in the feature films pt: Policarpo Quaresma, Heroi do Brasil and pt:O Enfermeiro. [1]

Early life

Paulo César Leão Ribeiro (born April 14, 1962)[2] in the neighborhood of Botafogo, city of Rio de Janeiro. Son of hydroelectric power plant designer Daltro dos Santos Ribeiro and Georgette Saraiva Leão. [3]

As a birth gift, he received a crib offered by actress Ilka Soares. At the time, Ilka was a Brazilian film star and was part of the cast of the Socila modeling agency, where Paulo's mother also worked and so the two ended up becoming friends. This event in his early childhood awakened in the future artist admiration for the famous actress and interest in the artistic world. During his childhood, he took drawing lessons from his father. As an adult, Paulo developed his artistic work in several segments. [5] [6]

Family

On his father's side, Paulo Leão is a descendant of the Sephardic Jews en:Abraham Senior and Branca Dias, and is therefore related to the composer Chico Buarque de Holanda and the musician João Gilberto among others. [7] [8] [9]

On his mother's side, Paulo is a descendant of the Spanish king es:Alfonso VI de León and related to the inventor Santos Dumont among others. [10] [11]

Paulo has three children. Laura Leão, Mariana Leão and Vitor Leão. Vitor, the youngest, continues his artistic activity as a guitarist, composer and singer, also known as Vitor Levenhagen. [12] [13]

Career

Paulo began his career as an actor in the 70s, almost simultaneously in theater and on TV, at the age of eleven in a school play and at twelve making a small appearance in the humorous program Azambuja & Cia by Chico Anysio on TV Globo. [14]

At the age of sixteen he had his first contact with cinema, in the short film Um Lugar de Paz (by J. Thiengo), which won him the New Actor award at the Rio de Janeiro Short Film Festival. At seventeen, he won first place in the selection process for the then renowned course for actors in Brazil, Jayme Barcellos Theater Course, where he attended singing, body, and acting courses with various teachers, including Jayme Barcellos himself. In the final exam of the course, presenting an excerpt from the play Um Grito Parado No Ar by Gianfrancesco Guarnieri, Paulo was highly praised by actress Ruth de Souza, who was the guest of honor at the event. Due to the success achieved at the beginning of his career and the series of invitations for new jobs as an actor and screenwriter, he interrupted his studies at the Faculty of Economics, to devote himself entirely to the performing arts. In 1980 he performed in the opera O Guarani, by Carlos Gomes, directed by Sérgio Britto, at the Municipal Theater of Rio de Janeiro. This production underwent major adaptations by the director to show the situation of indigenous peoples in their condition of being attacked, expelled, and defeated. [17]

During this period, Paulo Leão made dozens of works in theatre, TV, and cinema, as an actor, author, producer and director. Some of these works, for TV Globo, were: the soap opera Vereda Tropical; the soap opera Cambalacho; series Juba & Lula in the episodes O Projeto Nojento and O Gargalhofa no Parque. [14]

In 1983 he joined the Manhas de Cabaré Project, which between 1983 and 1985 managed the Glaucio Gill Theater in Copacabana, performing in the shows: A Travessia do Mar Amarelo; [18] with texts by William Shakespeare, Artur Azevedo, Albert Camus, and Thornton Wilder''; Céu Azul;[19] Sapomorfose (Inacen Award for the best show of 1985). [20]

In 1985, Paulo Leão staged Os Filhos de Vega, a work that is the precursor to the Teatro dos Sentidos - a method he created so that the audience perceives the show not only through sight and hearing, but also through smell, touch, and taste. [12] [21]

Anchors in 1986 received a motion from the City Council for the show and services rendered to the theater of Rio de Janeiro. [22]

In the early 90s he created the Companhia de Teatro Errante - performing numerous performances, with his play A Incrível História do Nobre Cavaleiro Errante e da Pobre Moça Caída, [23] inspired by the Commedia dell'arte, achieving great success with the public.

In the 90s he worked as an actor in dozens of commercials for Brazilian television, such as the newspaper O Globo, Kaiser beer, Mesbla stores, Rede Globo, Kibon, and Renner stores and also participated as an actor in the following cinematographic works:

  • Feature film Policarpo Quaresma, Herói do Brasil, based on the work Triste Fim de Policarpo Quaresma de Lima Barreto – with Paulo José – directed by Paulo Thiago. The film was awarded in Brazil, Argentina and Italy;[24]
  • Feature film O Enfermeiro, adapted from the work of the same name by Machado de Assis – directed by Mauro Farias. O Enfermeiro was the first co-production of the project "Contos no Cinema" by Canal Telecine, from Rede Globo. [25]

During a season in Europe in 2001, he participated in readings and held a workshop for Portuguese actors at the School of Cinema and Television in Lisbon, Portugal. And in Seville, Spain, he conducted research on flamenco music and dance. [26]

Back in Brazil, he starred in the 2004 miniseries Um Só Coração, on TV Globo, playing the role of Lasar Segall. The miniseries showcased an important period in Brazilian history, including the 1922 Modern Art Week. For three months, Um Só Coração was broadcast on Brazilian television in honor of the 450th anniversary of the city of São Paulo. [27]

In 2005, to enable the production and distribution of his creations, Paulo founded the film production company OlharFilmes/Samsara Film, with which he made many of his future works. The first of these was the documentary Por Que Você Veio Morar Aqui? at the Mostra CineBH2009 Brazil-France. [28] [29]

Throughout the 2010s, Paulo Leão created and directed music videos, being nominated for three consecutive years, at the Clipes & Bandas Festival, with works for important Brazilian singers such Arnaldo Antunes, Marina Lima, and Jards Macalé. In Arnaldo Antunes' video, Paulo was also nominated for the award for Best Video of the Year [30] [31] [32]

With the film A Hora, he was nominated in 2013 in the jury and popular vote categories for the Avon Award for Best Film for the Brazilian national campaign Em Briga de Marido and Mulher se Mete a Colher, resulting among the best voted by the public. [33]

In 2015, he successfully released the short film I Miss You, exploring the theme of nostalgia, with music composed by Snowflake. I Miss You premiered at a film festival in Russia and was awarded at the International Open Film Festival in the United States. [34]

In 2016, Paulo Leão was awarded Best Director at the North American Film Awards - (NAFA 2016), for Happy Birthday. In this film, in addition to directing, Paulo was also the protagonist of the plot, and is also the author of the story whose theme is loneliness. Happy Birthday also received several nominations and received other awards in the same year and in the following years, appearing in the Official Selection of more than fifty international film festivals, being presented on five continents in more than twenty countries, and entering the cinema circuit in some cities in the United States, distributed by Ozark Film. This year, too, Paulo participated as a judge at the Meters International Film Festival 2016 - New York. [37]

In early 2020, Paulo completed the script and began pre-production work and first shooting of his feature film Hendrix! [38]

In 2023, completing fifty years of his artistic career, Paulo Leão received another international award, this time in India: the Great Talent (CWIFF 2023), for his film Happy Birthday, at the Cinema of the World Film Festival. [39]

Also this year he began editing his documentary about the Brazilian singer Serguei, with the working title Serguei, O Rock Sou Eu. Filmed in Saquarema, Rio de Janeiro, at the Templo do Rock, [40] this documentary contains the last interview given to the media by the legendary singer. [37]

In 2024, Good Night was released, his first horror film, entirely produced in black and white, with no dialogue. The film was awarded Best Horror Film at its premiere, at the Black & White Film Festival - Toronto, Canada. And in the same year, again in Canada, Good Night was awarded Best South American Film at the Toronto SCI-FI/Fantasy Festival. [41] [42]

In the same year, Paulo released his music album Nas Estrelas internationally on digital platforms by the distributor Freshtunes. The album created by Paulo and his son Vitor, after the two spotted a UFO in Minas Gerais, is inspired by interstellar travel. [43]

The music video for the theme song was awarded an Honorable Mention at the WideScreen Film & Music Video Festival, also in Canada. [44]

At the same festival he was awarded an award for the film Happy Birthday in the categories film and trailer.

Also in 2024, his film Happy Birthday received the Best Experimental Film award at the Black & White Film Festival - Los Angeles and Toronto. [45]
