PayPlay.FM is an online music store from Ukraine. It was originally launched in the USA. The download music store currently offers over 3,600,000 songs of independent music in MP3 format. The store is available worldwide. The music in the store is sold at fixed bitrates, mostly 192 or 320 kbit/s depending on the song.

History[edit]

Payplay started in June 2006.[1]

From May 29, 2007, PayPlay.FM was offering its entire collection in MP3 format without DRM protection.[2] Prices were around 80 US cent per song.

Probably in late 2010, PayPlay.FM domain name was sold to a company in Ukraine. The price per song dropped to 33 cent (Feb-May 2011).

A new design was applied in 2012. It became more user friendly and powerful with large images of album covers, preview and album details. The albums got a customers rating option which is showing the current popularity of the album. New custom music charts edited by PayPlay.FM editors became available in 2015.

Legal issues[edit]

Payplay's help site claims that the service would be legal and mentions a Ukrainian licence. The legality of international sales must be questioned though, similar to AllOfMP3 and many other music download sites from East Europe. PayPlay used to cooperate with independent labels and distribution services. This made the catalogue very comprehensive. Now artists fear that they will not get any share of the revenues anymore.[3]
