The People's Mojahedin Movement of Iran (Persian: نهضت مجاهدین خلق ایران‎) was a splinter group to the People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (MEK) that was founded in 1976/1977.[1] Its members were associates of the Muslim Mojahedin who did not accept leadership of Massoud Rajavi and did not join his commune[disambiguation needed] in Qasr Prison.[2] This group was led by Lotfollah Meisami and Mehdi Qani was among its prominent members.[1]

Meisami's faction maintained that the MEK "had unnecessarily alienated the clergy, had not been vigilant enough against Marxism, and had been too inflexible in its dealings with the rest of the religious opposition". On the other hand, the Rajavi's faction accused them of "scheming to transform the organization into an 'apolitical discussion group' tied to the arch-conservative clerics".[3]

In 1986, some members of the group were recruited by Political Research School, an independent think-tank composed of intellectuals who were critical of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran but did not seek its overthrow. Among others working there were Habibollah Payman and a number of activists affiliated with the Freedom Movement of Iran.[4][relevant? ]

The group later became part of the current called the Religious-Nationalists.[5][not in citation given]
