Peter the Sinner

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Peter the Sinner (also known as Pere Cirera) is a folk saint venerated by Catholics and non-Catholics. He was a young man who was sentenced to death for sodomy at Lleida, Spain in 1458 AD.[1][2] Originally he was called Mahoma Mofari (Muhammad Mofari)[3] but changed his name to Pere Cirera prior to his execution, having converted from Islam to Roman Catholicism and receiving baptism.

Biography[edit]

A native of Fraga,[3] Peter was a potter who had sexual intercourse with a man named Acen or Acenet[4] and the two were imprisoned before being sentenced to be burned at the stake.[5] Because Peter converted to Catholicism his sentence was mitigated to drowning in the River Segre.[1]

Devotion to him exists clandestinely in Ireland and Spain among the LGBTQ community who celebrate his feast on 17 May,[2] the international day of anti-homophobia.[6] Holy cards bearing his image are distributed among devotees.[citation needed]
