History[edit]

The institute was founded by Blessed Father Antoine Chevrier, vicar of the Saint-André church [fr] in Lyon in the district of La Guillotière [fr], a disadvantaged industrial zone on the outskirts of Lyon. Affected by the conditions of poverty of the population, he began, with the help of Father Camille Rambaud [fr], to devote himself to the moral and material assistance of the working youth.[2]

On 10 December 1860, Father Chevrier bought an old ballroom "Le Prado", located in his parish, and established it to be the seat of his work. He also thought of training priests specialized in the service of the poor. In 1866 he opened a clerical school at Prado and in 1876 the first aspirants were sent to Rome to complete their training.[3]

In 1924, the Association of the Priests of Prado was set up as a society of apostolic life under diocesan law and aggregated on 19 May 1930 to a Franciscan Minor convent.[4][3] In 1954, the institute was transformed into a secular institute and as such received the decree of praise on 28 October 1959.[3]

Activities and Locations[edit]

The Institute of Prado does not have a specific goal, but undertake to place themselves at the disposal of their bishops for the service of the poorest and most de-Christianized parishes.[5]

In 2006, the Institute of Prado expanded its activities to forty countries around the world. Currently, the central organ of the Prado Society is located in Lyon, in a complex consisting of the memorial house-museum of Antoine Chevrier and the Catholic Chapel of the Prado [ru] founded by him. They are currently present in:[6]
