Publii is an open-source content management system (CMS) for creating, managing and publishing static websites. It is developed using the Electron framework. Uncommonly for a CMS, Publii is desktop-based, distributed as an application for Microsoft Windows, MacOS, and Linux, rather than the traditional server-side client and database that many modern CMS' use.
History[edit]
Publii was created by Bob Mitro and Tomasz Dziuda, two Polish web developers previously employed in the development and distribution of frameworks and themes for the Joomla! and WordPress CMS platforms. The initial alpha release was made available to download in December 2016 alongside the Publii website going live, with the first beta releasing three months later in March 2017. On release, the source code of the application was accessible only via extracting the executable file via the Electron framework. However, in July of 2018, a Publii repository was created on GitHub, allowing users to create forks of the core project and track and contribute to ongoing development.
Functionalities[edit]
Publii is a desktop-based application, with versions available for Microsoft Windows, MacOS and Linux. Like other content management systems, Publii includes functionalities for producing web content, including text, images, galleries , video embeds, sorting it into categories (referred to as 'Tags' in the Publii nomenclature), and applying a theme to the content to produce the core files of a functioning website which are then uploaded to a server via the Publii interface, or exported for manual deployment.
As the files produced are static in nature, a LAMP stack is not a requirement for a server to host a Publii-based website; all content is generated via the application on the user's desktop.
Publii supports the uploading of generated website files to a specific server using HTTP/HTTPS protocols, or to multiple cloud-hosting platforms, including GitHub Pages, Netlify, Amazon S3, GitLab Pages, and Google Cloud.
