RSG Group GmbH (Rainer Schaller Global Group) is an international fitness company with its registered office in Schlüsselfeld, Germany and administrative headquarters in Berlin.[2] It was founded in 1996 by Rainer Schaller under the name McFit GmbH.[3] After changing its name in 2016 to McFit Global Group,[4] it became RSG Group in 2019.[2] In the United States, the company is operating under the name RSG Group North America.
Organization[edit]
As of fiscal year 2019, RSG Group's reporting entity comprised of 16 domestic and 10 foreign companies.[5] As of 2021, the group employs around 41,000 people including franchisees, at approximately 1,000 locations across 48 countries.[1] In 2020, the group owned 17 brands.[6] Since the foundation, Rainer Schaller acted as managing director. Since 2018, the responsibilities of the operational business lie with Vito Scavo as authorized signatory.[7][8]
History[edit]
In the mid-1990s, Schaller developed the concept of the discount fitness studio in Germany.[9] After the opening of the first McFit location in Würzburg (1997), other branches followed throughout the country.[3] In 2007, McFit bought competitor Fit24. The company was now perceived as a major player in the industry.[10][11] Starting in 2008, Wladimir and Vitali Klitschko acted as testimonials for the McFit brand for several years.[12]
Over the years, the company diversified its brands and services.[13][14][15][16] A modeling agency was also added,[17][18] as well as a printed magazine, which was later developed into an online magazine.[19] The company also developed virtual course workouts.[20]
In the summer of 2020, RSG Group acquired the insolvent Gold's Gym fitness chain for $100 million. The American chain had filed for bankruptcy in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 61 company-owned studios and more than 600 franchised studios were acquired.[21]
