The Royal Concert in Brunei was a special concert event on July 16, 1996 performed by Michael Jackson, to celebrate the Sultan of Brunei Hassanal Bolkiah's 50th birthday. The event was attended by the royal family, except for the Sultan himself ironically, and 60,000 people attended the event at the Jerudong Park in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei. The amphitheatre was built specifically for the event, gifted by the Bruneian government to the people. The event lasted two hours, and was not the only concert performance played that year in Brunei. Whitney Houston [1]performed later that year for Princess Rashidah, the eldest daughter of the Sultan. Michael Jackson was welcomed to Brunei, and befriended the Sultan's son Prince Azim, who tragically died October 24, 2020.
History[edit]
Michael Jackson designed the show to fit the theme of his previous worldwide Dangerous World Tour, that lasted from 1992- 1993. With the recent release of his 1995 HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I album, he decided to include two new songs to the setlist. Jackson would embark on his History World Tour in two months, and at the end of his first leg of the tour[2], traveled back to Brunei to perform.
Details[edit]
This concert occurred exactly eight years after Jackson's Bad Tour at Wembley film was performed at Wembley Stadium in London, England. Michael Jackson began the show with a mesmerizing opening enterance for Jam, after the Brace Yourself (video introduction), as he did in the Dangerous World Tour. Jackson wore his iconic golden belt jacket, that he used for the Super Bowl XXVII halftime show[3]. The concert's encore was Earth Song, and included various video segments like Brace Yourself, Black Panther, Black or White (Macaulay Culkin) Introduction. The concert was recorded (professionally), but never released officially on Television, but the full performance is avaliable on the Youtube platform[4] for viewing. The concert also incorporated the final performances of Jam, Human Nature, I Just Can't Stop Loving You", She's Out of My Life". Originally the setlist was suppose to include songs from Bad, with songs such as Another Part of Me, Rock with You, Dirty Diana and title track itself Bad, and Heal the World was suppose to be included as well[5]. Most likely, the songs were cut due to time constraints. Since, Brunei is largely populated with Malaysian and Arabic speaking people, Jackson at the end of Earth Song said to the crowd As-salamu alaykum, meaning "Peace be upon you" in respect for their hosptiality.
