Saint Lucia–Spain relations are the bilateral and diplomatic relations between these two countries. Saint Lucia does not have an embassy resident in Spain, but the Saint Lucia embassy in United Kingdom was accredited to Spain.[1] Spain also has no embassy residing in Saint Lucia, but the Spanish embassy in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago is accredited to this country, in addition Spain has a consulate in Castries, St. Lucia.[2]
Historical relations[edit]
Christopher Columbus arrived on his fourth trip to the Caribbean on 1502, specifically on December 13, the day of Saint Lucia, where this island country gets its name.
Diplomatic relations[edit]
Spain maintains diplomatic relations with Saint Lucia since May 2, 1986. The Embassy resident in Port of Spain (Trinidad and Tobago) is accredited before the Authorities of Saint Lucia.
Since the summer of 2015 there is a Spanish diplomat residing in Saint Lucia, as business manager of the Spanish Embassy in Castries (dependent on Port of Spain).[3]
Treaties[edit]
In March 2014 the signing of a Schengen Visa Suppression Agreement for diplomatic passports, whose signature has not yet materialized, was proposed to the authorities of Saint Lucia. Although, when the exemption of Schengen visas for citizens of Saint Lucia comes into force on close dates, this agreement would cease to apply.
On September 26, 2014, a Memorandum of Understanding for political collaboration was signed between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Spain and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Civil Aviation of Saint Lucia.
In December 2014, a Memorandum of Understanding was also signed between the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States and the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation to send a reader with the aim of supporting Spanish studies – language, culture and literature – In the organization.[4]
