Name description

The name Sarakkalvilai refers to its soil condition. The village of Sarakkalvilai is geographically situated on the east side of a neighboring village named Vallankumaran Vilai. "Sarakkal" describes the opacity of that soil. In Sarakkalvilai, the soil is Gravel soil (Gravel soil in Tamil: சரளை மண்). "Vilai" describes the English word "Garden". Sarakkalvilai is a village situated in the southernmost district of Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu State, India. It is 16 km (9.9 mi) from Kanyakumari beach and 4.5 km (2.8 mi) from Nagercoil town, 90 km (56 mi) from the adjacent Tirunelveli district and approximately 60 km (37 mi) from Trivandrum city. The village of Sarakkalvilai is renowned for the Arulmigu Devi Shri Mutharamman Thirukovil and was an important citadel of Kanniyakumari district.

Location

Sarakkalvilai is about 20 km (12 mi) from Kanyakumari and about 4.5 km (2.8 mi) from Nagercoil, lying between these two towns. Buses ply from Thirunelveli, Kanyakumari, and Trivandrum. The nearest railway station is Nagercoil on the Trivandrum - Kanyakumari section of the Southern Railway.

Tamil is the official language and mother tongue for the people of Sarakkalvilai. The Tamil spoken here is a mix of Malayalam. The culture is also a mixture of Tamil and Malayalam traditions. Hinduism is the major religion in this village.

There are four important festivals: one in Chithirai (Exclusively for Arulmigu Devi Shri Mutharamman) in Tamil: சித்திரை திருவிழா. Second is in Aadi (For Arulmigu Devi Shri Mutharamman, Bathirakali Amman & Sudalaimada Swamy) in Tamil: ஆடி திருவிழா. The third is in Purattasi (Navarathri vizha - Nine nights) in Tamil: நவராத்திரி விழா. The Fourth is in Karthigai (Specially for Arulmigu Devi Shri Mutharamman, Bathirakali Amman) in Tamil: கார்த்திகை திருவிழா. During the Chithirai festival, on the third weekend is celebrated grandly each year for the goddess Arulmigu Devi Shri Mutharamman and Bathirakali Amman. They also celebrate Pongal and Deepavali well every year.
