Sehati Animal Sanctuary1 is Indonesia’s first sanctuary for Farmed Animals. Located in Dumai, Sumatra it provides a loving haven to animals rescued from needless exploitation, violence, and slaughter. The sanctuary supports human-animal bonding and serves to educate the public about animal rights in order to reduce worldwide animal suffering.

History[edit]

Sehati Animal Sanctuary was founded by Sing Hui and Loo Shih Loong in 2017 after they witnessed2 a pig being slaughtered at a wet market. They were very choked by the scene and decided that they had to do something about this. They became vegan, bought 5 Hectares of land in the middle of a palm oil plantation, and started making a home for rescued animals, starting with Sing's uncle pigs.

The Sanctuary was initially called "My Home My Animals Haven"3 as it was not intended to be a sanctuary. Quickly enough new animals were rescued and people started to bring them extra mouths to feed. Unable to face the costs of providing food and shelters for them. They sold 30% of the land they had purchased and reached out to Jakarta Animal Aid Network (JAAN)4 to ask for help. In November 2020 they contacted a group of volunteers in Bali who helped them rebrand the sanctuary to "Sehati", which means "one heart" in Bahasa Indonesia, a contraction of Satu (one) and Hati (heart).

Today they provide a safe place for 273 animals (pigs, goats, sheep, turtles, dogs, cats, turkeys, geese, ducks, chicken and rabbits).

Mission[edit]

The most significant impact of Animal sanctuaries apart from the non-human lives saved from abuse and slaughter, is to serve as in-situ experiences for non-vegans, as they provide opportunities to connect with their residents, when their location and infrastructure allow for visitors.

Farmed animals are especially vulnerable to speciesism, whereby humans considere them as mere "live" stock, objects without intelligence, personalities, or capacity to suffer. Indonesia has over 270 millions inhabitants, animal welfare is a relatively new concern in this vast archipelago with only some very basic Animal welfare and rights regulations.

Sehati animal Sanctuary being the only sanctuary for farmed animals in Indonesia 5, its mission is to lead by example for future sanctuaries, and to educate the general public on animal behaviours and welfare.

Fundraising[edit]

The sanctuary is entirely funded by private donations and it costs approximately 40 million IDR or $2800 USD to maintain the sanctuary per month. A virtual adoption program has been launched in June 2021 to get some monthly recurring donations, along with a Public relations campaign in an attempt to improve the living conditions of the residents and to be able to welcome visitors and volunteers in the future.
