Shujinkou (主人公, Shujinkou) is a dungeon-crawling Japanese role-playing game (JRPG) developed and published by Rice Games Inc. The game is the first of a trilogy[1]by the debut indie studio, Rice Games, and integrates Japanese language learning into its mechanics, allowing players to encounter and engage with language elements as part of the gameplay.[2]
Story
The narrative follows three protagonists—a retired samurai (Shu), an eccentric fox (Jin), and a princess (Kou) as they confront the Akuma, creatures that consume language and threaten the land of Genya.[3] The campaign spans over 80 hours, divided into two arcs, and features 16 handcrafted labyrinths.[4]
Gameplay
Shujinkou features turn-based combat within labyrinthine dungeons. Players control the three main characters, each with differing abilities and backstories. The game includes Japanese language content such as vocabulary, kana, kanji, and grammar elements, covering content from JLPT N5 to N1 standards.[5][better source needed] Players can choose to engage with the language-learning elements or play in an English-only mode, depending on their preference.[citation needed]
Development and Release
Announced in 2019 as a game made by students,[6][7] Shujinkou was developed with the goal of appealing to players interested in both JRPGs and language learning.[citation needed] Following a Kickstarter campaign which fell short of the $45,000 goal, no funding was secured.[8]
A demo was released on Steam[9][better source needed] and PlayStation 5.[10]
The full game was released digitally on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC on February 13, 2025.[11][12] A Nintendo Switch version is planned for late 2025.[13][better source needed]
Reception
Early impressions of the demo have highlighted the game’s combination of traditional JRPG gameplay with language-learning features.[14]

RPG Fan rated Shujinkou 95/100, calling it "the new gold standard of DRPGs", praising its dungeon design as "a true masterclass" and noting similarities to Etrian Odyssey.[16]
