Sidney A. Beers was a civil engineer, City Surveyor of Troy, New York and the inventor of the Improved Elastic Railroad, for which he was granted a patent on 18 May 1858.[1][3][4][5][6][7]

Civil Engineering[edit]

Sidney A. Beers was the third son of Jerome F. Beers (1812-20 Nov 1889) and the grandson of Daniel M. Beers, one of the first settlers in Mehoopany. Sidney was as a civil engineer a member of the corps of engineers that located the North Branch Canal before he became City Surveyor of Troy.[8]

Politics[edit]

Sidney A. Beers (Liberty Party) received 2,187 votes during the 1858 New York state election and was an unsuccessful canditate of the Radical Abolitionist ticket during the 1860 New York state election.

Improved Elastic Railroad[edit]

The invention of Sidney A. Beers, 280 Broadway, New York, consisted of employing a sub-foundation of rubble stone, a block of oak plank, a shoe of cast iron, an arch or foundation rail and ties also of cast-iron, surmounted by a rolled iron coping rail, with an elastic material introduced between the two kinds of rail.[1]

Although the first cost of construction was expected to somewhat exceed that of the railroads in use at the time, the expense of repairs was predicted to be so far diminished as not only to speedily reimburse the construction account, but also to ensure a largely increased dividend upon the total investment.[1]
