Smile Zemi
Smile Zemi is a tablet-based home learning service for children in grades 1-5. Its educational contents include Mathematics, English Language Arts (ELA), Word Study (vocabulary and spelling training), and Ninja Drill (basic math and grammar training).[1] Smile Zemi is developed by JustSystems Corporation, headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, and marketed by its subsidiary, JUSTSYSTEMS AMERICA, INC., based in Los Angeles, California.
History
Smile Zemi is offered by JUSTSYSTEMS AMERICA, INC., an education technology company based in Los Angeles, California. Its parent company, JustSystems Corporation, is a listed manufacturer of educational software founded in 1979 in Japan.[2]
The Smile Zemi service originally began in Japan in 2012 as the first tablet-based in-home learning system in the country, designed for its elementary school students. The service won the best prize in several awards, including the Nikkei Superior Products and Services Awards in 2013, IID Award for English Teaching Materials for Children in 2015, and IID Award for Distance Learning in 2017.[3][4][5]
In Japan, the middle school course started in 2013, the preschool course in 2018, and the high school course in 2022.[6] As of 2023, courses are offered for preschoolers, elementary, middle school, and high school students, and over a million students have used the service in Japan.
In the United States, the Smile Zemi service started in June 2023 for first to fifth graders, with its math and ELA curriculum aligned with Common Core State Standards.[7]
Content and structure
Subscribers to the Smile Zemi service have access to all first- to fifth-grade content of Mathematics, English Language Arts (ELA), Word Study (vocabulary and spelling training), and Ninja Drill (basic math and grammar training). The system analyzes each subscriber's learning data and suggests lessons suited to the learner's stage of attainment.[8]
Each math and ELA lesson consists of an Introduction, Learn (explanatory video), Practice, and Quiz, and additional lessons are suggested for each learner based on the results of the Quiz. All reading materials for ELA feature a read-aloud option.
Word Study contains various vocabulary training, including phonics, syllables, prefixes, suffixes, and spelling. Ninja Drill contains basic math and vocabulary worksheet exercises.
Tablet
The Smile Zemi program works solely on its dedicated tablet with a closed system, which does not have access to web browsers, video-sharing sites, or gaming apps.[9] The tablet employs a palm rejection technology where the touch panel detects the coil in the digitizer pen and ignores anything else, which makes handwriting on the tablet panel easy and accurate.[10] After the service ends, the tablet can be converted into a normal Android tablet for personal use.
