The Society of Chemical Engineers or SoChem, is a student's organization under the patronage of the Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT (BHU), Varanasi. It acts as an interface between the students and the experienced faculty and administration of the department. The society aims to deal with the problems of the students, analyzes them and places them before the faculty for their advice and consideration.

Structure[edit]

The Society is organised in such a way so as to give equal representation to all sections of the student body of the department. Student representatives are selected from each batch of students of the undergraduate and postgraduate classes. The President, Vice-President and Treasurer of the Society are selected from the Faculty, while the student office-bearers are one Vice-President, one General Secretary and one Joint Secretary, and two class representatives from each batch of students.

The to all the student posts are done on the basis of general academic performance of the candidates and the support of majority of students.

Activities[edit]

The primary motive of the society is to organize activities for development of professional skills in engineering students, that can be gained only outside the classroom. The society regularly meets to discuss issues, problems and concerns of the students and tries to find solutions amenable to both the students and the administration. In addition, one major responsibility of the society is to help in organisation of Osmoze[1], the annual technical festival of the department.

  • Lecture Series: The society regularly organises lectures and interactive sessions with esteemed professors, seasoned industrialists, and alumni. This is an opportunity for students to learn from professionals who have gained experience in real life, and learn from them.
  • Workshops: Personality grooming and skill development workshops are organised by the society to help students acquire the necessary exposure for success in the professional world.
  • Osmoze: The annual technical festival of the department is also hosted by the society. Support on all fronts, financial, logistics and in terms of public relations; is provided by the society members.
