Sundari Silks is an Indian wardrobe store and silk saree emporium located in Chennai and Mumbai. It was established by K. Rajaram with a grit and passion to preserve and propagate India’s diverse weaving heritage. They are one of the first garment shops in South India to export silk shirts and introduced sarees with pre-designed blouses.

Legacy[edit]

The family has been in the textile business for over 80 years. In the year 1998, K. Rajaram established his own brand, Sundari Silks. Inspired by his father K. Kothandaraman, he always prioritized customer experience over sales, right from its inception, which has translated as the brand's core value.[1].

His diligence and ardent attention to detail has made the brand synonymous with heritage, culture and tradition. He currently mentors new weavers, designers, and artisans who continue to uphold the diverse indigenous art forms of our motherland.

Rajaram's sons Manmohan and Shankar have taken over the huge responsibility of the enterprise, which is built on quality and trust. His daughter Radha and daughter-in-law Pavithra Manmohan also play pivotal roles in carrying forward the legacy[2].

History[edit]

They opened their first showroom in T Nagar, Chennai in the year 1998[3]. After commencing a weaving repertoire with 70 looms at the Thirucherai unit, they witnessed massive growth and popularity. This resulted in the development of a new weaving operation in Aranai and opened the doors for another showroom in Mumbai in 2011. They grew to prominence between 2012 and 2019, expanding their lines to include ethnic apparel for men, women, kids and traditional handicrafts. In the year 2021, they introduced their own jewellery collection and gold coin scheme - Athirshtam.

Showrooms[edit]

They have two showrooms in India. One store is located in North Usman Road, T Nagar, Chennai and the other is located in Vile Parle, Mumbai. Both showrooms exude an ethereal aura of royalty and are well-known for their hospitality which has helped them gain a global following. Rajaram has been instrumental in building the experience of being inside a mother's home within the showroom’s vicinity.

Events[edit]

The 5th Walking Hand-in-Hand event, a yearly fashion showcase conducted by the CDS Art Foundation, Ahmedabad[4].

Awards and Recognition[edit]

Mr K Rajaram was honoured with the prestigious award for his ‘Lifetime Contribution’ towards promoting traditional handwoven Indian crafts and artisans by the CDS Art Foundation[5]
