The Bay Club Company is a private fitness and sports membership organization with 26 locations on the West Coast of the United States.[1] Founded in 1977, it operates sports and hospitality facilities, including fitness centers, racquet sports, golf, swimming, and dining.[2] The company is headquartered in San Francisco, California.[3]
History
The Bay Club Company was established in 1977 by Pete Jones and Jim Gerber as Western Athletic Club, launching its first co-ed sports club in San Francisco.[3][1] Since its inception, Bay Club has expanded by acquiring fitness clubs, sports resorts, swim and tennis clubs, beach clubs, golf resorts, and country clubs across California, Oregon, and Washington.
In 1992, Bay Club Redwood Shores (formerly Pacific Athletic Club) became the first sports resort to open in the United States.[4] In 2008, Bay Club introduced their "campus model", which groups together clubs within a close geographic area to offer a complete set of amenities as a single membership option.
In 2017, the organization established Bay Club Cares, a charitable initiative supporting community organizations such as Tour de Pier, Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco, Augie's Quest, and Toys for Tots. This legacy of generosity traces back to the vision of Chuck Feeney, an early investor and advisor for the Bay Club and a renowned philanthropist who dedicated his life to the principle of “giving while living.” Feeney's passion for supporting communities and fostering opportunities has been a guiding influence on the Bay Club's mission, inspiring programs and initiatives.[5]
In 2018, global investment firm KKR & Co. acquired The Bay Club Company from York Capital Management as the lead investor and JMA Ventures and Roxborough Group as minority investors.[6][7] Financial terms were not disclosed.[8]
In 2021, Bay Club launched a "Shared Membership" option, allowing up to six individuals outside a household to share a membership.[9]
