The Silverfern Group is the world's largest family office investment club.[1] It is a multi-asset class investment management firm which makes direct investments in middle market private equity, real estate and private debt around the world. It is based in New York, and has offices in Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Sydney.[2] It is also one of the first firms to launch an RAIF in Luxembourg[3] to strengthen ties with Asia-based investors.[4]

Company background[edit]

Silverfern was established in 2001 as a single-family office, and quickly grew to include more than 20 international families. The firm utilizes a network of international families and their views on local markets, a concept which led to a partnership with Citibank and the subsequent addition of another 40 direct investment families from Asia, the Middle East and Latin America.[5]

The firm was co-founded by Reeta K. Holmes and Clive R. Holmes and both serve as managing partners. Reeta Holmes was formerly with Soros Fund Management and The Blackstone Group, and Clive Holmes is the former co-head of M&A for Deutsche Bank Securities in NYC .[4]

Club Med acquisition[edit]

In February of 2015, The Silverfern Group announced their investment in the acquisition of Club Med in partnership with Fosun International and other strategic co-investors.[6] The acquisition came after a two year bidding war that began in March of 2013. As Jiannong Qian, Gaillon Invest chairman said when the deal was finalized, "We can now get on with the work we started almost five years ago to support the development of Club Med in France and in fast-growing markets."[7]

Other investments[edit]

In January 2017, Silverfern completed the acquisition and take-private of SAI Global, a global risk management solutions provider, in partnership with Baring Private Equity Asia.[8]

In November 2016, Silverfern, in partnership with the Riverside Company, acquired Waste Services Group, a provider of waste management services to the Australian commercial and industrial sectors.[9][10]

In October 2016, Silverfern, in partnership with Arroyo Energy Investors, acquired Broad River Power Holdings, an 878-megawatt gas turbine electric power plant in Gaffney, South Carolina.[11] In May 2017, Silverfern completed a follow-on investment in Broad River, in what was the firm’s fifth portfolio follow-on investment over an 18-month period.[12]

In June 2016, Silverfern completed two follow-on investments. One in support of the acquisition by Silverfern portfolio company O-Tex Holdings of the cementing assets of the Sanjel Corporation out of bankruptcy. The second was a follow-on in support of the acquisition by Silverfern portfolio company Sequitur Energy Resources of oil and gas reserves in the Permian Basin in West Texas from EOG Resources.[13]

In May 2016, Goldman Sachs Merchant Banking Division and Silverfern acquired Continental Bakeries, the largest European producer and distributor of private label baked goods. The company has approximately 1550 employees at 12 factories in Western Europe and produces more than 2500 different products.[14]

In February 2016, Silverfern invested in the acquisition and take-private of APR Energy Plc in partnership with Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited, ACON Investments, Albright Capital Management and members of APR Management. In July 2016, Silverfern completed a follow-on investment in APR, which is a provider of large scale electric power generation solutions.[15]

In January 2016, Silverfern invested in the recapitalization of Tempo River Park Apartments in partnership with the developer, The Wolff Company. Tempo River Park is a 235-unit Class-A apartment community located in Oxnard, California.[16]
