Thomas G.A. Jackson (born January 24, 1953) is a Swedish medical doctor,[1] psychiatrist, author and lecturer known for having acted as a whistleblower in the debate about apathetic refugee children in Sweden between 2005 and 2006.

Jackson began his career as a doctor at the age of 24. His main specialty is general adult psychiatry.[2] Because of his broad clinical interest he has also worked in other medical specialist fields, such as in internal and rehabilitation medicine. He also has 10 years of experience in general practice. Jackson's clinical experience has given him insights in the field of malingering diagnostics.

The area in which he became a well known authority is Malingering by Proxy, abbreviated MAL-BP in the US and in the UK, which involves induced or fabricated illness in children. Dr. Jackson has worked in Sweden, the United Kingdom and Norway where he currently resides. Jackson's first years of clinical medicine were devoted to neuroscience i.e. psychiatry, neurology and neurosurgery. After completing his internship he worked with occupational medicine at the Swedish State Television service and Swedish Radio in Stockholm part-time and was part-time deputy principal at the Stockholm Professional School of Naprapathy. Jackson is a well known doctor in Scandinavia and has acted as a whistle blower several times.[3] He has also published articles in the Norwegian Dagbladet about simulation diagnosis.[4][5] Jackson runs a webpage which according to himself is a satirical site called "Jackson Hunts Journalists" which functions as "a psychotherapeutic forum for persons traumatized by deceitful journalists".[6] Jackson has coined the term "Group malingering by proxy" which was used for the first time in the state investigation of the apathetic refugee children.[7] Jackson has a total of 35 years of doctors experience and he is specialized in simulation diagnostics.[8] When working as a crew doctor he requires the operation managers to abide by Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) in order to secure the best outcome for the patient safety.[9]

Apathetic refugee children in Sweden[edit]

Jackson has released two books on the subject of apathetic or resignated refugee children and their vulnerable situations being victims of the recently and increasingly discussed Malingering by Proxy situation.[10] In his first book "Veritofobi”[11] he discusses how Sweden's political establishment and doctors fear of consequences, due to "political correctness", allows refugee children to be abused by their families.[12] Jackson states that the children are used as human shields to avoid repatriation together with their families.[13][14][15] In his second book, Copycatbarnen (lit. "Copycat Children"), Jackson explains the mechanisms at hand in the epidemic of unconscious asylum seeking children counting roughly over 2000 and how main stream media has branded whistle blowers as nazis[16] or xenophobes.[17]

Misunderstanding of Malingering by Proxy[edit]

In his books Dr. Jackson explains how Swedish media has misunderstood the term malingering by proxy, an English term that includes the word malingering. This has led to a misconception among Swedish journalists that have accused Jackson of saying that the children are malingering which according to Jackson is wrong. He writes that the children are ”under severe torture especially when the adults have more or less coerced the pediatricians to prescribe a gastric tube which enables the adults to slowly starve the child to apathy and resignation".[18] In an interview with Swebbtv Jackson informed that some children had been starved to death which might make this one of the biggest scams in the history of medicine[19][20][21][citation needed] When Jackson acted as a whistle blower in 2008 and 2009 he was, according to Jackson, "labeled as a nazi" when news papers wrote of him joining Svenskarnas Parti. He was mentioned in Aftonbladet,[22] Folkbladet, Svenska Dagbladet, Expo, Dagens Medicin, Expressen, Metro, Arbetaren and Hela Hälsingland[23][24][25][26][27][28][29][30][31][dubious ]. There is no official explanation by Swedish media why there is a denial that the children are in a MAL-BP situation despite Jackson's publications. Jackson believes that Swedish medias political stand on migration policy prohibits any commentary on the health of refugee children. This despite the children being the victims.[32] On January 18, 2006, Dagens Medicin published an article by Jackson who stated that "the Swedish doctors fear of speaking of the possibility of malingering by proxy contributed not only directly but also indirectly to the severe abuse of refugee children".[33][34] Elisabeth Sandlund, editor of Dagen, Sweden's largest Christian newspaper, stated in a one hour long phone session with Jackson two years later that his theory was "extremely dangerous for refugees" and the article was removed.[35] Jackson has criticized Sandlund heavily for the decision. According to Jackson, the article was too controversial for Swedish standards and it had been removed two years earlier from the paper where it was published namely Dagens Medicin. Jackson himself a confessing Christian criticized sharply Elisabeth Sandlund stating that a responsible editor for a Christian newspaper ought to be more open for debate especially when discussing extra vulnerable refugee children. Jackson states that this event illustrated how Swedish media was in a denial of adult asylum seekers abusing their children.

Public debate[edit]

Between 2005 and 2009 the debate in Sweden had become intense and Jackson believes that Swedish State Television did not include anyone of the opinion that the children were victims of MAL-BP[36][37] Left wing activist and doctor Henry Ascher, member of Swedish Communist Party,[38] was invited to the debate.[39][40][41][42][43] Together with author and reporter Gellert Tamas they were given space in State Television and State Radio to inform the Swedish public about their hypothesis that the resignated state of the children was caused by trauma in the country from where their families fled.[44] Simultaneously, Jackson believes he was branded as a right wing extremist[45][46][47][48] and thereby denied him the opportunity to deny any allegations resulting in Jackson becoming known as the nazi doctor[49][50][51] unable to treat resignated children[52][53][54][55][citation needed] In addition, researchers at Karolinska Institute told in a report called "The Burden They Came With" from 2008 that the children were ill because of traumas in the country they fled from. The report contained well known contributors with respected positions.[56] The report was questioned by British Medical Journal on the 1st of December 2008.[57] On October, 2006, Marie Hessle, state executive, and Nader Ahmadi, research leader, heads of the Swedish National Coordinator for Children in the Asylum Process with Resignation syndrom ("den nationella samordnaren för barn i asylprocessen med uppgivenhetssymtom"), reported Uppdrag Gransknings show "Spelet med de apatiska flyktingbarnen" (The toying of apathetic refugee children) for having intentionally distorted the information given by reporter Gellert Tamas in the documentary. Tamas is also accused of having twisted Jacksons commentary of simulation being a possible solution to "being the main reason for the asylum seeking children".[58] The report contains 24 points which was send to Granskningsnämnden för radio och TV (The investigation committee for radio and TV).[59]

According to Jackson: reporters in mainstream media published articles claiming they were defending children with severe illnesses but could not admit they were wrong because the dimension of the scandal was too big. Many highly respected editors and media owners had already in 2006 made up their minds that Jackson was wrong and a right wing extremist. Sweden's most respected and international award winnings journalists like Nils Hanson and others in Swedish State Television risked being made a mockery as they used character assassination to kill whistleblowers and promoted left wing doctors making the public debate biased. Jackson told that he was threatened by trafficking gangs from Eastern European countries in 2006. The threats were reported to the police and the investigation resulted in the police telling Jackson that ”the threats come from trafficking gangs that believe you destroy their business". Jackson told the media about the threats but they showed no interest. Jackson believed that they at the contrary believed it was good that ”Jackson, a christian doctor, who was against multiculturalism, was threatened”.[citation needed]

Jackson released two books, one titled ”Veritofobi” and the other ”Copycatbarnen” but was not allowed to advertise them in main stream media or in Christian papers like Dagen with editor in chief Elisabeth Sandlund. In 2008 she told Dr Jackson she would never allow his books to be advertised as they were "dangerous for asylum-seekers". In the books Jackson describes the situation for the asylum seeking children as ”horrible”  when they are used as human shields to help their families avoid repatriation. Since Swedish State Television labelled Jackson as ”an incompetent nazi” he was given little attention despite his unofficial reports of a refugee child having died in the University hospital of Örebro. He also revealed in an interview with Swebbtv during an interview with reporter Mikael Willgert[60][citation needed]

On the 29th of May, 2019, Lars Erik Hansen, professor of archival science, specialized in critique of sources, from the Oslo Metropolitan University, writes in a thank you letter to Jackson saying "Thank you for an interesting lecture. Ground braking science dares to question accustomed or reflexive reactions and base the results on observations. Come autumn, a request will be handed for budgetary allocation for continued science in this area. I myself am a specialist in critique of sources and have studied medical history. I became conscious about the subject through Jacksons research and have examined the basis. There is nothing proving that Jackson used anything other than scientific approach and has been careful with his sources".[61]

International reports[edit]

According to a Swedish scientific report from Karolinska Institute, in 2016, it was clear that the epidemic only occurred in Sweden and that the cause was due to socio-cultural mechanisms.[62][63][64] In 2013, the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare had given the mysterious condition an ICD-10 diagnose F32.3A, resulting in the condition being labeled as an illness.[65] Jackson vehemently opposed this saying that it was a ”surrealistic scandal” as MAL-BP was not an illness but severe child abuse and that terminal stage of this severe child abuse is resignation. Jackson meant that the famous medical institution Karolinska Institute had so deeply twisted the discussions about Sweden's resignated children that the Swedish establishment in fact accepted severe malpractice with years long tube feeding on innocent and vulnerable refugee children on such a scale that the children show severe stress reactions such as extreme stress hormones levels, severe traumatic reactions and in the end resignation. The aspect that MAL-BP is a crime was supported by Scientific American Psychiatry in 2017. According to Jackson, Swedish news papers has never discussed MAL-BP or mentioned that the concept exist even though it was discussed in 2006 in the State Investigation. Jackson supposes that Swedish newspaper has discussed the broader term malingering when discussing the refugee children.

Professor Marc Feldman, a well known authority on malingering by proxy tells in an interview on Swebbtv year 2017, that he is utterly convinced that a majority of the refugee children in Sweden with resignation syndrome are victims of malingering by proxy which is the same suggestion that the Swedish governmental report brought to focus.[66] However the report was ridiculed by Swedish State Television. Professor Bryan Lask, child psychiatrist in the United Kingdom has stated that ”all the cases in Sweden are more or less malingering by proxy".[67][68] Gregory Yates and Christopher Bass, head of department of Psychology Kings College London states that "some caregivers fabricate illness in their children purely for financial gain, as can be seen in published reports of Malingering by Proxy".[69] Essentials of Pain Medicine writes in their report from that "in addition, some cases of malingering may involve a parent fabricating an illness in his or her child, again for the purpose of external gain (such as social benefits). The phrase “malingering by proxy” has been suggested to describe this scenario".[70]

Judith Libow at Children's Hospital & Research Center in Oakland in the Department of Psychiatry writes in the published study "Child and Adolescent Illness Falsification" that "further study of children who falsify symptoms may in some cases help identify earlier experiences of Munchausen by proxy abuse or covert parental coaching of illness falsification, and provide more effective interventions. Better understanding and identification of these children is likely to help prevent the development of more chronic adult factitious disorders".[71] The studys conclusion states that "medical conditions fabricated by children may go undetected for a variety of reasons, or diagnosed as somatization.[71]

Marion Godman, head of the Institute of Philosophy in the University of London has stated that "the so-called apathetic children phenomena have two competing models that both appeal to a non-organic grounding of the disorder".[72]

On March 17, 2017, the New Yorker published an article titled "The Trauma of Facing Deportation" stating that the apathetic refugee children had become sick once they had learned that their families risked being deported.[73]

Political stance[edit]

According to Jackson, Swedish medical education suffers from "a black hole" in diagnostic training as it is strictly forbidden to discuss whether a patient might be malingering.[74] The result is that it is also taboo to discuss the more complex issue of Malingering by Proxy. In 2011 Julian Sheather from British Medical Associations Ethical Committee told that he found the fact of the children being under severe pressure as ”very disturbing” and encouraged clinicians in similar situations to report these cases. When Jackson reported the cases, Swedish prosecutors lacked the appropriate language to use the term ”Malingering by proxy” as it had been declared as taboo despite being mentioned in the official governmental report of SOU 2006:49.[75] Jackson was interviewed in 2006 by Swedish media where he said that he was a Christian doctor and that he was against multiculturalism[76][77][citation needed] Jackson believes that his political stance made the reporters nervous since the idea of a Christian conservative doctor solving the problem of an enigmatic epidemic could lead to consequences due to public pressure. Jackson also believes that the medias portrayal of Jackson, a conservative doctor pictured being against refugee children became a sensationalistic hit.[citation needed]

On January 27, 2012, Jackson publicly demanded in a letter sent to Aftonbladet that all resignated children be granted asylum immediately in order to save the children from the suffering of the MAL-BP situation.[78] When Swedish media denied him public space Jackson protested by joining the right wing Swedish Peoples Parties, corresponding to British National Party, as they had promised him a platform to communicate to the public about the suffering of the children. When Jackson joined the party, which he chose to leave after one month, he attracted negative publicity and he pressed charges against Aftonbladet, Sweden's biggest newspaper. Jackson demanded that the chief editor Jan Helin should be jailed for promoting child abuse by deliberately spreading disinformation about the term malingering by proxy.[79][78] The Swedish Medical Association stated in the legal hearings that ”Dr Jackson had done nothing ethically wrong". The court resulted in a compromise with Jail Helin being freed of all charges and Jackson not paying any legal bills. The case is titled No. B 15812-16 in the Stockholm District Court.[80][78]

Jackson has pointed out that several media organisations have hijacked the theme to gain public interests instead of speaking how the children are put in a helpless, defenseless state where they become handicapped. A radio programme from Sveriges Radio which aired in 2009 confirmed that the Swedish asylum system had contributed to the children's fate.[81] The children who were separated from their parents became healthy after receiving nutrition by the hospitals which supported Jackson's hypothesis of MAL-BP (Malingering by Proxy). He stated that returning the children to the parents again could be fatal.[82] In 2017 BBC aired a radio showed titled "Resignation Syndrome: Sweden's Mystery Illness" where Annica Carlshamre, a Swedish senior social worker stated that the children's condition had "no relation to asylum, instead it was trauma". The doctors interviewed stated that there was no way for them to help the children because they did not decide who would stay and who could not.[83]
