Timo Preece is an American musician.

Early life and education[edit]

Preece began playing bass clarinet in elementary school, before moving to the drumline in high school. While his personal style was influenced by punk-rock, goth, industrial, dark wave, synth-pop and Delta Blues in high school, his college education further broadened his understanding of music. He studied world percussion including classical Hindustani and Carnatic Indian music; Sudanese Gamelan; and West African, Ghanaian and Afro-Cuban drumming styles.

He started his college education at Mt. San Antonio College before continuing his studies at UCLA graduating with a BA in ethnomusicology in 1999.[1] In his studies, he found that producing and performing with music technology created the opportunity to fuse the ethnomusicological influences that he was exposed to with triphop, techno, IDM and other electronic music styles that he found inspiring. Timo found himself learning more about the technical side of music production by taking gigs in studio sessions for those wanting to bridge world instrumentation into their contemporary popular and cinematic music productions.

Preece became one of the first Ableton Live Certified Trainers in 2009.[2] In 2014, he completed an MSc in Sound Design at the University of Edinburgh. He wrote his dissertation on Exploring Strategies for Real Time Electronic Music Performance.

Music projects[edit]

GravityTerminal is Preece's main solo artist project and the umbrella for his company GravityTerminal LLC. He creates a diverse alchemy of multimedia amalgamations ranging from Cinematic IDM, darkwave synth-pop, electro-acoustic, techno, ambient, experimental and others.

Preece moved to Tokyo, Japan in 2000 and created an album with Cory Crowther called Audio Movements.[3] He also created AfroBeatBombBarter with Shane Berry that focused on hardware based electronic drum machines and groove boxes. Beyond these, he worked on various music and sound design projects for different websites during his four years there: touring Tokyo, playing live electronic music gigs, creating productions for CD/DVD and doing audio mastering work.[4]

Preece created Lucid Mechanism in 2009 with drummer Peter Thomas, singer songwriter Sarah Tancer, and bassist Paul MacLachlan aiming break the stereotypes of live electronic music. Their music is influenced by various genres including synth-pop, drum and bass, industrial, minimal, ambient and experimental; and artists like Nine Inch Nails and Trentemøller. Their first performances were around the San Francisco Bay Area including Supper Club, Red Devil Lounge and Temple SF.[5][4] They performed live on Creepy KOFY in 2011.[6]

In 2015, he partnered with yogi TJ Jackson to create Sonic Sadhana, a series of nada yoda practices to a live-performance of binaural, electronic and acoustic instrumentation.[7] Their performances are designed to attune the mind and body, creating balance and a stronger presence of self.[8] They went on tour in April of that year with performances in Nice, Zürich and Paris. In January 2016, they performed in Geneva, Barcelona and Paris.[9][10]

Preece releases music under Planetary Cymatic Resonance with partner Steffen Günther.[11] Formed in 2014, the duo use their combined knowledge of audio technology, sound design, cosmic frequencies, neuroscience and physics to make music that ranges from meditative to experimental dance music.[12] The duo joined Hans Cousto, the godfather of the Cosmic Octave, in 2016 for a performance during a lecture on cosmic frequencies in Klangtage Berlin.[13] It was there that they made the first seven tracks of Planets & Chakras, their full length release.[14]

At the 2017 Ableton Loop Summit, Planetary Cymatic Resonance hosted interactive workshops on Brainwave Stimulation and Therapeutic Sound teaching participants to use brainwave entrainment, harmonics and physics to "direct awareness and activate non-ordinary states of consciousness (NOSC)".[15][11]

Now, Preece offers services like audio/music engineering, consulting, production, education, performance technology/show design and product recommendations through his company GravityTerminal LLC.[16]

Sound Design[edit]

Preece consulted as a sound designer, producer and instrument programmer for Native Instruments, Ableton, Minus, Sony Music to name a few. Timo programmed original instruments, effects and devices for Ableton Live 10's Build and Drop, Skitter and Step, Chop and Swing sound packs as well as their Live 10 and 11 built in sound libraries.

In 2016, he began contracting for Native Instruments composing demo songs for their software instruments and effects. He created groove sets and presets for the India and Middle East instruments of their Kontakt Discovery Series; and produced songs for their promotional videos and listening selections.

Preece showcases his prowess as a sound designer in his course Capturing The Sounds of Berlin published in 2016 on Ask.Video.[17][18] In this course, he covers field recording challenges, microphone techniques and capturing the ambient acoustic fingerprints of physical spaces while giving viewers a tour of Berlin's historical architecture. He published a review on MacProVideo of The Sound of the Mountain (MNTN), and Ableton Live in which he, as part of Planetary Cymatic Resonance, describes how he designed a realtime 3D sound performance using those formats.[19]

Currently, Preece designs and teaches courses in audio synthesis and sound design at the University of Southern California. He developed a course called Music Technology Performance which is the first of its kind at the university that teaches, "the study of building custom setups for real-time performance, designing electronic instrument layouts, advanced device configuration, musical content creation, as well as, the opportunity to learn and practice performance skills using Ableton Live, MIDI devices, external controllers and other instrumentation."

Consulting, Technology and Show Designing[edit]

Under GravityTerminal LLC, Preece uses his knowledge of multimedia, immersive technology to create custom performance setups integrating hardware and software for his clients. He is a certified Logic Pro Instructor, Avid ProTools Expert, and Instructor. Also, Preece was one of the first Ableton Certified Trainers.[20]

While living in San Francisco, he built DJ Shadow's live performance rig for his ShadowSphere World Tour and consulted for artists like Rob Garza (Thievery Corporation), Mickey Hart, BassNectar, Beats Antique, Pete Sears, and Materialized.

In 2009, Preece joined Laura Escudé's company Electronic Creatives as a music programmer, show designer and playback tech.[21] He has worked with a variety of artists since then including Charli XCX, Iggy Azalea, and Troye Sivan. Touring internationally, he pilots the live performance tech for artists such as Ariana Grande, including her acceptance of Billboard's 2018 Woman of the Year Award.

Writer and Educator[edit]

As an instructor at USC as of 2018, Preece writes and teaches curriculum for courses in the Music Technology department, most notably his courses on Performance Technology and Electronic Synthesizer Techniques using Ableton Live, Logic Pro X, and Pro Tools.[22]

From 2020-2021, Preece served as the Curriculum Director for Splice SKILLS, creating Music Technology curriculum, and shaping the direction of their educational platform and video content.

Preece began his career as audio educator in 2004 as a course director at Ex'pression College. Through successfully advocating for new curriculum implementation, he established Ex'pression College as an Ableton Certified Training Center. He focused on sound design, music production, digital audio workstations, synthesis, sampling, mixing, editing, post-production and recording courses; often coordinating recording and mixing sessions, and teaching various levels of analog and digital audio production techniques.

Preece also built and launched the curriculum that established Pyramind Music Production School as an Ableton Certified Training Center as a course director. He taught classes on Advanced Sound Synthesis, Audio Production and Electronic Music Performance; and created content for online classes.

From 2012 to 2016, Preece developed a popular Ableton Live course on producing music, and served as a mentor for various recording and production projects at Foothill College in Los Altos, California.

Previously, Preece published written articles, tutorials and reviews on Ask.Audio as one of their audio technology journalists beginning in 2013.[23] MacProVideo commissioned Preece that year as a specialized sound design, music performance and audio production content creator.[24] He conceptualized and produced full online video courses for MacProVideo including his course on Killer Sound Design In Ableton Live where he highlights the complexities of audio sculpting.[25] Since then, he has written many articles, reviews and product tutorials for companies including Elektron, Ableton, Roland, Keith McMillen, and SubPac.
