Tobi Mohammed (fondly called: Alhaji Popping[2]) is a Nigerian event promoter and talent manager. He is the founder of The Block Party Series, and TopBoy Entertainment. In 2022, following the merger between his imprint, TopBoy Entertainment, a service-based agency, and The Plug, a 360-entertainment company, Tobi was named Managing Partner and Chief Operating Officer of The Plug.[3]
Career[edit]
Tobi Mohammed[4] began his career at a renowned technology company known as Softcom,[5] where he creates tools that help solve problems within the eco-system on digital payment and transfers. His career in the fin-tech industry took a turn as Softcom promotes him to the marketing department as Vice President, making him more accessible to the public.[5] In 2013, he founded a talent agency known as TopBoy Entertainment and began his career as a talent manager, event promoter, A&R, and record label executive.
As a talent manager, he managed the careers of Terry Apala, Ajebutter22, Ayo Jay, and Rayce. He currently manages the following artistes including; Sess The PRBLM Kid, BOJ, Victony, and Bella Shmurda. In 2018, he founded The Block Party Series, which consists of the Mainland BlockParty, Capital BlockParty, and the Island BlockParty. As a show coordinator and manager, he produced the following shows, Mayor of Lagos Concert, Buju’s Space, Falz Experience, Our Homecoming, and Nativeland.
In 2020, he spoke at Social Media Week Lagos.[6] In the same year, he served as an executive producer on Victony's debut single "Space & Time",[7] and Victony's debut EP Saturn, presented by Mainland BlockParty.[8] He also served as an executive producer, and A&R on Sess The PRBLM Kid's debut extended play Spotlight,[9] and executively produced Mainland BlockParty studio album Confluence Project.[10] On 13 September 2022, Tobi imprint TopBoy formalise merger between Asa Asika, and Bizzle Osikoya imprint The Plug.[3]
He has helped launch the careers of many famous Nigerian musicians including Falz, Adekunle Gold, Reminisce, Teezee, and Victony.
Accolades and recognitions[edit]
In 2019, Tobi won the Afrobeats Live and Award for Afrobeats Power Players of the Year.[11] In the following year, he lost the Scream All Youth Award for Entertainment / Media Personality to Slimcase manager Dami Adenuga. On 24 December 2022, TurnTable Power List named him as one of the Music Executives In Nigeria, on its year-review.[12]
