USS LSM-422 was a LSM-1-class landing ship medium in the United States Navy during World War II. The ship was transferred to France as L9015 and Taiwan as ROCS Mei Cheng (LSM-251).
Construction and career
LSM-422 was laid down on 23 October 1944 at Dravo Co., Wilmington, Delaware. Launched on 7 December 1944 and commissioned on 31 December 1944, Ltjg. Rowland K. Chase in command.
During World War II, LSM-422 was assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific theater. She was assigned to occupation service in the Far East from 2 September to 12 October and 26 October to 21 December 1945.[1]
LSM-422 was decommissioned on 19 July 1946 but was recommissioned on 15 September 1950 amid the Korean War.[2] The ship took part in the U.N. Summer-Fall Offensive from 16 to 24 November 1951, the Second Korean Winter from 24 November 1951 to 30 April 1952, the Third Korean Winter from 1 December 1952 to 30 April 1953 and the Korea, Summer-Fall 1953 from 1 May to 27 July 1953.
She was loaned to the French on 5 February 1954.[3]
She was struck from the Navy Register.
The ship was commissioned into the French Navy on 28 June 1954 and renamed L9015.[3][4] She served in the First Indochina War later that year.[5]
L9015 was returned to the US on 5 February 1954 and then transferred to Taiwan in November 1956, where she was commissioned in November 1956, as ROCS Mei Cheng (LSM-251). The ship was later redesignated as LSM-351.
After the national government withdrew from Taiwan, until November 15th, 1956, in accordance with the revised Mutual Aid Security Act, the US military once again handed over the three ships of Mei Cheng, Mei Kun, and Mei Ping at Yokosuka Port, Japan.[6]
The ship was put out of service in 1971 with her fate unknown.
