Ujeni Records is a Malawian record label that was created in 2017. The name is a wordplay on the Chichewa gloss ujeni, which is a filler word used while thinking or as a placeholder for a forgotten word.

History[edit]

Ujeni Records originated as the brainchild of Norwegian musician and producer Karstein Grønnesby, who was working in Lilongwe at the Music Crossroads Academy as part of a cultural exchange program under NOREC and JM Norway. Living and working in Lilongwe, he got quickly got engage with the music scene in Lilongwe, and discovered the lack for a platform where artists could record and distribute their music, as well as promote their music. At the same time, Music Crossroads had a studio on their compound but a small capacity. Thus, Karstein Grønnesby founded Ujeni Records as a means to give talented and upcoming artists in Lilongwe a platform to strengthen the Malawian music industry, as well as include students at Music Crossroads Academy in practical learning of music technology and music production. After Karstein's exchange program ended in 2017, the record label's local operation has been maintained by newer participants within the exchange program under his mentoring, notably by the Norwegian producers Jonas Brekke Krossli and Jakob Høydal.

As a small label within a small industry, Ujeni has taken on a 360° character handling management, content creation and booking for signed artists, which has resulted in tours in Southeast Africa[1] and Europe[2] and video content aired on Malawian national TV channels.
