Um, Actually (styled as Um, Actually...) is a game show produced by and broadcast on Dropout. It was created and originally hosted by longtime CollegeHumor writer Mike Trapp, before being replaced by Ify Nwadiwe at the start of the show's ninth season[1][2]. The show, according to Trapp, is intended to be "both a celebration and a takedown of [...] the worst of nerd behaviour"[3], while still teaching you "something interesting, funny, or surprising."[4]
Premise
The show revolves around a series of incorrect statements around nerd-related fandoms. Players must identify what the incorrect thing being said about the property in question, and correct it. Episodes normally feature three contestants, however the two Valentine's episodes feature four guests in two teams of two.
Contestants must start all of their corrections with the phrase "Um, actually..." or else another contestant can steal the point from them. Additionally, the host may ask players to be more precise with answers that don't provide a full correction.
While questions are usually in the form of statements about pop culture with an incorrect element for players to identify, each episode also features three "Shiny Questions" (named after Shiny Pokémon, and as described by the hosts, "Worth the same number of points, just a little bit different, and a little more rare"). These are usually themed around a specific properties or categories - such as movie taglines, or original book covers.
Additionally, the show contains occasional video questions, where a special guest reads out the incorrect statement instead of the host. Previous video guests have included Weird Al Yankovic, Jonathan Coulton, Kristian Nairn, and John Darnielle.
The final question of each episode revolves around an incorrect statement on real-life skills, a joke on the idea that these would be the most difficult questions for nerds to answer.
The set of the show is also decorated with replicas of items from pop culture properties with something changed slightly, keeping with the theme of the show, including a square Pokéball and a shoe-version of Thanos' Infinity Gauntlet from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
History and Evolution
Um, Actually initially was run as a liveshow at University of California, Berkeley. Seeing how well this was received, Trapp decided to try the format out on video, and on 17 January, 2015, Um, Actually premiered as a nine episode web series on CollegeHumor's YouTube channel[5], as part of the site's 'CollegeHumor Originals' series of skits, with Emily Axford, Pat Cassels, and Jon Gabrus serving as the lineup for the premiere episode. Brennan Lee Mulligan was first hired to CollegeHumor as a question writer for the web series[6], continuing to do so until 2020.
The show then transitioned in 2018 to a proper show on a dedicated set, more in line with other CollegeHumor shows like Game Changer or Dimension 20. The show retained roughly the same structure as the original web series, but Shiny Questions changed from being player specific to having each player attempt the challenges.
The show has a fact-checker onhand to correct any inconsistencies with questions, or research answers given by players during the game which may not have been accounted for when the questions were written. The primary fact checker for the series was Michael Meir Saltzman, who also wrote many of the questions for the show, although others such as Jessica Clemons have also served in the roll. He first appeared on an episode as himself in the first episode of Season 4[7], before appearing as a contestant in the second episode of Season 5[8]. The show then features a dedicated introduction for Saltzman after the players' introductions from their return to set in Season 6 in his own corner of the studio, dubbed "Fact-Checker Corner". Saltzman was replaced by Brian David Gilbert when the show changed hosts from Trapp to Ify Nwadiwe from Season 9 onwards.
The show also featured a segment which featured fan-submitted corrections on statements from previous episodes known as 'Well, technicaly...', with Trapp awarding points to answers he found interesting or amusing. This segment was removed from the start of Season 4, when production went remote due to the Covid-19 Pandemic.
Fan-submitted questions were introduced as a segment in the 'Fans vs Faves' series of episodes at the end of the first season, drawn from replies to the show's Twitter, or from Dropout's community Discord, which has continued through to the latest season.
While most episodes feature a wide variety of topics, Season 2 saw the introduction of special themed episodes with the second episode, A Very Special TV-Themed Episode, a theme which continued into later seasons, most notably those which were recorded remotely due to the pandemic.[9]
In other media
In 2021, Dropout announced that it would be crowdfunding the release of a board game version of the show developed by Wiggles 3D.[10] The campaign ended successfully on 16 June 2021, with 13,514 backers pledging 884,260 CAD (639,448.20 USD / 474,613.29 GBP / 550,907.24 EUR) against a goal of 30,000 CAD (21,697.15 USD / 16,103.55 GBP / 18,690.45 EUR). Several issues of the game were developed including a community edition and deluxe edition and multiple expansion packs.
