History[edit]
Takahashi published a one-shot titled Katte na Yatsura, for which she was awarded the Shogakkan New Comics Award. She began work on Urusei Yatsura later that year. She had difficulty meeting deadlines to begin with, so chapters were published sporadically until 1980.
In 1981, a TV series based on the manga began airing. It was produced by Kitty Films and Fuji TV, and the first 106 episodes were directed by Mamoru Oshii. Oshii would go on to become an acclaimed director in his own right.
Six feature films were created. The first two, Urusei Yatsura: Only You and Urusei Yatsura 2: Beautiful Dreamer, were directed by Oshii. Beautiful Dreamer was where Oshii's storytelling style began to form. The fifth film, Urusei Yatsura: The Final Chapter, is the only film to adapt any of the manga's storylines.
Several Urusei Yatsura-themed video games were published from 1986 to 2005.
