Velimir Kalandadze (Georgian: ველიმირ კალანდაძე; May 10, 1935 – October 27, 2017) was a Georgian physicist and chess composer. He held the titles of Master of Chess Composition (1979) and International Master of Chess Composition (1984).[1] In practical play, he was a Candidate Master.[2]
Kalandadze was a laureate of numerous international competitions, winning first prizes in the Lelo competition (1961, with Vazha Neidze), the Olympic Competition (1976, with David Gurgenidze), Shakhmaty v SSSR (1979), and 64-Shakhmatnoye Obozreniye (1984), among others.[3]
Biography
Beginning in the 1950s, Velimir Kalandadze co-published chess problems in the newspaper Lelo alongside his father, Ioseb Kalandadze, before later composing independently. During this period, he graduated from the Faculty of Physics at Tbilisi State University and worked in scientific institutions for several years.[4]
Kalandadze was also an active competitive chess player and participated in the semifinals of the Georgian Chess Championship. For many years, he edited the chess columns for the newspapers Molodyozh Gruzii and Sakartvelos Respublika.[5]

This work was declared the best endgame study of 1990 by a jury chaired by the English chess composer and editor of EG magazine, John Roycroft.
