The Vikatan Group is a media publication house headquartered in Chennai, India. The media house publishes news through 12 magazines and a news channel under its name.[1] The magazines are circulated in India, predominantly in the state of Tamil Nadu with weekly or monthly editions. The most popular magazine of the Vikatan Group is Ananda Vikatan which was first published in 1928 by S.S.Vasan. The group is currently headed by B. Srinivasan.

History[edit]

Ananda Vikatan was started by Budalur Vaidyanadhaiyar in February 1926. In January 1928, S.S. Vasan bought the rights and relaunched it with the same name and a new format. S.S. Vasan died in Chennai on 26 August 1969, at the age of 65.

By then, his son S.S.Balan had joined Ananda Vikatan as a joint Managing Director. S.S. Balan expanded the group with the publication of the magazine Junior Vikatan. The magazine is known for its investigative journalism. He served as editor, managing director and publisher of the magazine for nearly 50 years till 2006. He died in December 2014 at the age of 78 due to a heart attack.[2]

Ananda Vikatan was then consolidated in the Vikatan Group and FIPP, a global trade media association appointed B Srinivasan as the Managing Director of Vikatan Group.[3] He introduced magazines in multiple genres , expanded in the internet publishing space in 1997, started paid-for contributions in 2005, embraced social in 2010 and built an app presence since 2011.[4] Srinivasan also started Vikatan book publishing, having published more than 1,000 books. In 2018, he appointed a senior management team to look after operations across India.[5]
