Vinoj P. Selvam (born 1986) is an Indian politician born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He received a bachelor's degree at the Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University. As a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, (BJP) he ran in the 2021 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election but lost. He is the state president of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, the BJP's youth wing, in Tamil Nadu.[1]

Early life[edit]

Vinoj Selvam was born in 1986 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India, to Panneer Selvam. His father is the president of a merchant company and the chairman of the Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce. The family owns two hotels, a theatre, and other properties.[1][2]

Career[edit]

Selvam joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2007.[1][2] He became Tamil Nadu's state president of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (English: Indian People's Youth Front), the BJP's youth wing, in June 2016.[3]

In March 2021, Vinoj P Selvam, has been fielded his nomination from Harbour constituency.[4]

2021 Tamil Nadu election[edit]

Selvam ran for election as MLA in Harbour Constituency in the 2021 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election but lost by 25,000 votes.[5][6][7] He had been leading in the preliminary rounds but subsequently fell behind.[7] He contested against P. K. Sekar Babu of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), which had held the constituency for most of the previous 40 years.[8]

Allegation & Cases[edit]

Selvam was allegedly a member of unlawful assembles in 2020 and has seven pending charges, most of them under the Epidemic Disease Act.[9]

In an incident where a youth leader of the Tamil Nadu BJP Vinoj P Selvam was given a gun as a gift in Madurai has become a controversy. Vinoj P Selvam participated in the Youth Meeting held in Madurai on September 5, 2020. He was gifted a gun at the event.[10][11]

The Chennai Cyber Crime Police booked Tamil Nadu Youth Wing President Vinoj P Selvam under sections of IPC including for spreading misinformation with an intent to incite communal tensions. The BJP leader was booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code for his tweet against the DMK government. The complaint was filed against a tweet by Vinoj P Selvam in which he said the DMK cadre demolished 130 Hindu temples in 200 days. The complainant Elangovan said that the leader tweeted false information which may incident violence and cause hatred among the public.[12] Section 153 (Wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot), 505(1)(b) (with intent to cause fear or alarm to the public, or to any section of the public whereby any person may be induced to commit an offence against the State or against the public tranquility) and 505 (Statement conducingpublic mischief) of the Indian Penal Code have been invoked.[13][14][15]

The judge agreed to grant advance bail to the petitioner since his counsel R.C. Paul Kanagaraj argued that the tweet was actually based on a news report that had appeared in a Tamil daily regarding demolition of temples in the guise of removing encroachments.[16]
