WHOOP is a fitness technology company based in Boston, Massachusetts. The wearable device collects data on sleep, heart rate variability, resting heart rate, and other metrics to create a daily recovery score for users.[1] The recovery score ranges from 0% to 100% to let users know if their body is recovered or if it needs rest.
The WHOOP band is popular among both consumers and professional athletes such as LeBron James and Michael Phelps. It is also popular among CrossFit athletes and many top CrossFit Games athletes, such as Katrín Davíðsdóttir and Brooke Wells, wear the devices during training and competition.[2]
History
When Ahmed was on the squash team at Harvard University, he became interested in optimizing his workouts, especially in regards to heart rate and recovery. In 2016, WHOOP launched its first product, a fitness tracker that focused on providing workout and recovery data for professional athletes.[3]
In March 2021, WHOOP and CrossFit, Inc. announced a multi-year partnership making WHOOP the official wearable device of the CrossFit brand.[4]
