WebID Solutions GmbH is a financial technology company based in Berlin that offers products and services for legal transactions conducted online. These include, in particular, personal identification and online signatures.

The company was founded in Berlin in 2012 by Frank Stefan Jorga and Tim-Markus Kaiser and Franz Thomas Fürst.[1] The company developed a method for personal identification via video chat, which was approved by Bafin in 2014 after repeated discussions with the German Federal Ministry of Finance.[2][3] In 2016, a location was opened in Kiel for app and software development, IT project management and server administration.[4] In the same year, WebID expanded the business to Switzerland with a newly founded subsidiary and a cooperation with Swisscom AG.[5]

WebID was in a legal dispute with a competitor for several years. The competitor accused WebID Solutions of patent infringement and was proven right in the first instance in 2017.[6][7] In 2020, however, the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court dismissed the action as unjustified.[8]

WebID patented their online identification in the United States in 2018 and founded two locations in New York City and in San Matteo.[9][10]

Since April 2020, Jorga is leading the company as sole managing director.[11] In September 2021 the British investor Anacap took over the majority of WebID Solutions,[12] and a cooperation with the German competitor Verimi was announced. Both steps are meant to lead towards establishing the company outside of Europe.[13]

WebID Solutions is registered as a Gesellschaft mit beschränkter Haftung (GmbH) with the Charlottenburg (Berlin) Local Court.[14] Since September 2013, it has been located on Friedrichstraße in Berlin.[15] Other locations are in Kiel, Solingen, Frankfurt and Hamburg.[4][16][17][18] In Solingen, WebID maintains a call center.[3][19] WebID Solutions GmbH acts as the head of the WebID Solutions Group, which has subsidiaries in Austria, Switzerland and India.[16][20] A location in the United States has been established since 2020.[10]

WebID Solutions works with clients from the banking sector but also web commerce companies.

CEO of the company is Frank Stefan Jorga, CTO is his brother Sven Jorga.[21]

Products and Services[edit]

The company focuses on products and services for legal transactions conducted via the internet. This includes personal identification via video call, via online ID, online banking, digital identity or with the help of AI, as well as age verification (AVS) and online contracting.[22]

The online personal identification procedure was developed as an alternative to the long-established Postident procedure of Deutsche Post.[23] It is the first of its kind and is patent-protected in Germany, the United States and in China.[24][25]

Awards[edit]

In 2016, the company took first place in the Growth Stage category of the Fintech Germany Award.[26][27] In 2020, WebID received the Top Service Seal of the German Institute for Quality Standards and Testing (DIQP).[28]
