Wilson Atumeyi is a sociologist and an anti-corruption activist. He is the founder and Chief Executive of Water With Development.[1] (WaterWide), a non-profit organisation that tracks government spending and international aid for Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) to ensure transparency, accountability and the proper implementation and completion of WASH projects in rural communities in Nigeria, thereby improving the living conditions of Nigerians through targeted capacity building, advocacy, multidimensional engagement, and social mobilisation.
Early life
Wilson was born to the family of HRH Umoru Yusuf Atumeyi and Mrs Esther Itse Atumeyi in 1992. He attended Albakans Pre-science School Jos, Plateau state. He completed his secondary school at Government College Pankshin, Plateau state.
Higher education
Wilson Atumeyi has a diploma in Banking and Finance from the University of Jos[2] Plateau state. He is a graduate of Kwararafa University Wukari with a bachelor's degree in Sociology.
Career
He has worked with Connected Development/Follow the Money, a non-profit organization that is empowering marginalised communities in Africa with access to information on how to better engage their government for the implementation of public services, as a Communications Officer and later worked for the International Centre for Investigative Reporting (ICIR), an independent nonprofit news agency that seeks to promote transparency and accountability through robust and objective investigative reporting. His passion for community development led to him founding Water With Development to engage in advocacy at both policy and decentralised levels, influencing policies and practices that impede access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene by the people in rural communities and developing the capacity of relevant stakeholders and rural community members, equipping them with the right knowledge for best practices in the water and sanitation sector, and establishing mechanisms for ensuring government spending accountability. He is a communications consultant and delivers training on advocacy and policy influencing, Strategic Communications, Corporate Branding and Brand Management.
Activism
While he was in Kwararafa University Wukari, Wilson Atumeyi used graphic designs to propel a good learning system and advocate against lecturer-student corruption. In 2019, he founded WaterWide to ensure that people in marginalised communities have a voice and living conditions are amplified leveraging technology. He was involved in several advocacy campaigns that led to policy changes in Nigeria including a marginal increase for health in the 2018 budget, Not Too Young to Run and Disability Rights. He was selected by YouthHub Africa to lead the Media and Publicity department of the Women and Girls Rights Defenders (Abuja Network).
Work
He leads a team of young Nigerians to improve access to safe water and sanitation facilities at Water With Development (WaterWide). He is the Director of Communications for Lola Cater for The Needy Foundation, a nonprofit organisation that improves the socio-economic development of disadvantaged persons. To promote transparency, accountability and citizens’ engagement in governance, he builds the capacity of young Nigerians on the Freedom of Information Act (FoI) and the use of technology to amplify issues. He was selected as Accountability Lab's Accountapreneur for 2020[3]
