Yalla Parkour is a Palestinian documentary film directed by Areeb Zuaiter produced by Basel Mawlawi got selected among 16 projects to be part of the Close Up Initiative 2023.[1]

Plot[edit]

The 19-year-old Ahmed is determined to become a Parkour world champion, but reality pulls him an inch away from his goal every day. In addition to Mohammed, Jihad, and Abdallah, Ahmad is part of a team that practices parkour, a sport of freedom that he practices with them in Gaza, the city of restrictions. When. Mohammed survives a detrimental injury, Ahmad’s far-fetched dream of. building a Parkour Academy in Gaza becomes a necessity.[2][3]

Yalla Parkour takes us on the journey of parkour athletes who grow through adolescence as they struggle to seek freedom in a world of confinement. Abdullah, Jihad, Mohammed, and Ahmed are millennials in Gaza who are inseparable from each other, united by their perseverance and their passion for parkour. Jihad's efforts to pursue parkour were overshadowed by family obligations. Abdullah's dreams conflict with his need to obtain a university degree and earn a living. Mohammed's pursuit of this sport was interrupted by a harmful injury. Despite his love for Gaza, Ahmed's parkour ambitions and several failed visa attempts made him determined to escape. Ahmed fulfills his "Gaza dream" - he escapes from his besieged and war-torn homeland to a promising career in Sweden.

Now, at the age of 24, Ahmed has achieved a great level of success and safety in Stockholm. With a new life full of freedom, he left Gaza far behind - but his nostalgia for his beloved parkour friends back home is now closer than ever.

He wishes he could "put it all together" to take it back and share it with his friends and family. He can't really enjoy his newfound freedom without stopping to think about the journey of Gaza that got him to where he is now. Physically it is in one place. Mentally it is in another.

In Yalla Parkour, Ahmed takes us all the way between his past and his present. Through visuals and narration, he experienced his journey from Gaza to Sweden. between instability and structure; Isolation and community hope and despair.[4][5][6]
