Yara International School (Y.I.S, Arabic: مدرسة يارا العالمية) is a private K-12 English-medium school in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia[6][7][8] which offers both Indian and British curriculum.[9] Established in 2003,[10] the school is recognized by Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Education and affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education in New Delhi, India[11] and the International General Certificate of Secondary Education in Cambridge, United Kingdom.[12][13] Arab News and Canada's NewspaperDirect (now PressReader) jointly regarded it as one of the best schools in Riyadh in 2012.[14]
History[edit]
Yara International School was established in 2003, operating with only 79 students[15] in a villa at Al-Hanafi street, Ar-Rabwah neighborhood of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.[16] The school shifted its campus to Imam Muhammad ibn Saud Islamic University[17] building in Dheera district of Riyadh in early 2013. Aasima Saleem has been the principal of the school since its establishment.
Academics[edit]
The school is affiliated to India's Central Board of Secondary Education and Britain's International General Certificate of Secondary Education. The school offers education from Kindergarten to 12. Boys and girls are segregated from Class 4 onwards. The school has installed smart class digital boards in every classroom.[18] In 2016, Arab News reported that Yara has been maintaining a streak of 100% success rate in Class 10 examinations since 2008.[19]
Languages[edit]
First and second languages in the school are English and Hindi respectively, whereas third languages have variety of options like Urdu, Malayalam, Arabic, Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, etc.
Arabic as an auxiliary subject is compulsory for all students till Class 8 as per regulations from Saudi Ministry of Education.
Islamic Studies as an auxiliary subject is compulsory for students of Muslim faith whereas non-Muslims can opt for Moral Science
Memberships[edit]
Yara is a member of the Saudi Chapter of Gulf Sahodaya, the council which is responsible for jointly conducting Class 9 and Class 11 examinations of CBSE schools in Saudi Arabia[20] and other countries of the GCC.
School's engagement[edit]
Yara regularly engages with other Indian schools in Riyadh and other cities of Saudi Arabia for friendly sports matches,[21][22][23] other extra curricular activities like inter-school debates[24][25] and various competitions.
In 2008, Yara conducted a youth leadership program which aimed at improving children's communication skills in collaboration with Kohinoor Toastmasters Club.[26]
In 2012, Yara school backed the diabetes awareness initiative launched by Saudi Ministry of Health and organized a "walkathon" of 400 students and male staffs under the banner 'YIS Walk for Diabetes Awareness Program' at Al Nahda Park.[27][28]
In 2017, Yara invited former education minister of the Indian state of Kerala, P. K. Abdu Rabb as its chief guest at an investiture ceremony.[29]
In 2018, students from Yara participated in a celebration of India's National Education Day, organized by Osmania University Alumni Association Riyadh (OUAAR) and Hindustani Bazme Urdu in remembrance of the contributions of Abul Kalam Azad, India's first education minister.[30]
In 2018, Indian ambassador to Saudi Arabia Ahmed Javed honored Aasima Saleem and other principals at the award ceremony of Bharat Scouts and Guides held at International Indian School Riyadh for her service in the field of education.[31]
In 2019, Aasima Saleem was among 38 attendees at the 29th Principals' Conference titled 'Hubs of Learning' organized by Gulf Sahodaya at International Indian School Jeddah which mainly focused on finding ways to comply with new academic and other guidelines laid down by CBSE.[32]
