Your Big Year or YBY is a global platform for youth to learn skills to bridge from academics and career by running various free, student & youth programs. The program focuses on the UN Sustainable Development Goals and has worked with hundreds of thousands of youth.

YBY is owned and operated by International Connector, San Francisco based social enterprise founded by Marti Grimminck[1] and Tony Grimminck[2]. Their agency consults with corporations and government agencies on Generation Z and Millennial trends. Some of the youth who participate in YBY, are invited to participate in corporate projects with the International Connector team.

History[edit]

Your Big Year was originally launched as a travel competition by Smaller Earth, a youth travel agency based in Liverpool, United Kingdom. The first competition had over 60,000 entries and brought 24 youth to Liverpool for a week of competition activities. At the end of the week, two young adults, Michael Teo[3] from Malaysia and Carielle Doh from the United States, were offered a year-long trip around the world.

The second competition had similar results, but this time brought 16 young people from around the world to Liverpool and London to participate in the Global Entrepreneurship Week held in Liverpool. The competition tasks for the youth were focused on entrepreneurship skills and the youth pitched to industry leaders such as Sir Richard Branson, Sir Terry Leahy, and Martha Lane Fox. At the end of the week, Charles Batte[4] from Uganda was offered a year-long trip around the world.

In 2013, Marti Grimminck brought the competition to San Francisco. She set up the program to work with local corporations such as Google, Deloitte[5] Center for the Edge, Bloomberg Media and Vodafone, and local industry professionals such as VCs and leaders in Corporate Social Responsibility. The youth also worked with actor Giancarlo Esposito on storytelling through video. The event changed the path forward for Your Big Year and since then the program has been owned and operated by International Connector.

In 2018, International Connector launched a new Your Big Year travel competition focused on North America. Four youth winners were selected for a 4-week road trip around the US. Covering 14 States, the trip worked with a variety of travel partners including Virgin Hotels, HotelTonight, Nashville Music City and Contiki.
