Aelf is a smart contract platform and crosschain protocol based in Singapore and run from China.[1][2][3]. The CEO, Ma Haobo, started working on the project under the name GRID, but renamed the project to aelf to avoid confusion with GRID+[4]. The version 1.0.0 of the aelf node client was released in December 2020[5]. The mainnet launch is planned to take place in five stages[6].

    Project Outline

Aelf follows the scalability school of sidechains connected with the main chain via adaptors. Adaptors are a chain-specific implementation that allows nodes to prove their interaction with the target third-party[3]. Adaptors have the advantage of not requiring homogeneity in order to interoperate, at the cost of having to implement custom solutions per target bridge. This kind of solution is also called a notary scheme, blockchain of blockchains, blockchain migrator, or blockchain connector[7]. As a blockchain of blockchains and unlike Polkadot, aelf does not require chain homogeneity, while Polkadot can only operate with other Tendermint blockchains.

In aelf, each sidechain runs exclusively one smart contract, following the principle of "do one thing, do it well." Each sidechain can, in turn, create its own set of indexed sidechains[3].

    Community

In 2018, the aelf foundation launched a program called CandyBox, which had the objective of spreading the word about the project. During the program, users were rewarded in ELF tokens in exchange for retweeting, sharing posts, or completing miscellaneous shilling tasks. After two years of operation, the program was canceled, having delivered mixed results, with users complaining about low payouts[8].

    Amaten

One of the biggest onboardings the aelf foundation has managed to complete is with Amaten, a Japanese gift card company[9][10][11]
