AirGap is an open-source cryptocurrency wallet, launched in 2018, that allows users to store their crypto funds using a two-device approach. It is developed by Papers AG, based in Zug, Switzerland.
Overview
AirGap is a self-custody cryptocurrency wallet that helps users to securely store their funds using a two-device approach. The system helps users to secure multiple secrets (private keys) on an offline device such as a smartphone that is not connected to the Internet and use another device to initiate transactions without exposing any of their secrets online.
The first device installs an app called the AirGap Vault. The AirGap Vault stores the private keys offline and signs transactions using QR codes. The AirGap Vault application is installed on a dedicated device that has no connection to any network, and even if it is installed on a device with a network, the vault still stays offline, thus it is air-gapped. The vault app is available on Android and iOS and can be used alongside other wallets like MetaMask, and others.[1]
The second device installs an app called AirGap Wallet. It can be used to perform transactions, portfolio management, and staking/delegation.[2] It supports multiple cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, Tezos,[3] Polkadot, Cosmos, Aeternity,[4] Moonbeam,[5][6] Groestlcoin,[7] and many others.[8] The wallet app is available on Android, iOS, Microsoft Windows, MacOS, and Linux.
AirGap integrates with WalletConnect and MetaMask.[9][10][11]
History
Zug-based Papers AG initially released a concept for a crypto wallet in 2017 with Ethereum support, which received great feedback. After that, in July 2018, the AirGap Wallet and AirGap Vault were released officially with Bitcoin, Ethereum, and æternity support. In August 2018, an open-source version was released. Later, in August 2021, WalletConnect's integration was introduced.[12]
