Ajithkumar Varma Thampan (Malayalam:അജിത്കുമാർ വർമ്മ തമ്പാൻ) (Hindi:अजीतकुमार वर्मा तमपान) (born 8 January 1980) is an eminent Indian Criminologist [1]and Chief Investigation Officer of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) at London. He formerly worked as an Indian Diplomat [2] at India House, London (The High Commission of India, London) (2005-2013).[3] He is a Human Rights advocate, writer and a philosopher.[4]

Mr. Thampan is an advisory expert and part of a Special Investigation Team [5]constituted by Department of Home, Government of Kerala and State Police Complaints Authority to investigate several custodial tortures especially custodial murder at Parassala police station, Marangattupalli Sibi death at Marangattupalli police custody etc. His contributions as Senior Investigation Officer[6] on refugee issues at UNHCR London was outstanding in the history. [7]UNHCR was established on 14 December 1950 and succeeded the earlier United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration [8]. The agency is mandated to lead and co-ordinate international action to protect refugees and resolve refugee problems worldwide. Its primary purpose is to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees. It strives to ensure that everyone can exercise the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge in another state, with the option to return home voluntarily, integrate locally or to resettle in a third country.[9][10][11] He Formerly worked for Govt of India, Ministry of External/ Home Affairs in various capacities as Visa Officer, Consular Officer, Chief Protocol Officer and Programme Director at the Indian High Commission, London. He also had a great role as Programme Officer at the Nehru Centre London for promoting and formulating India’s external cultural relations, to foster mutual understanding between India and UK to promote cultural exchanges with people. He was joined Indian Navy earlier as an Officer Cadet/Midshipman.[12]
Early life[edit]
Mr. Ajithkumar Thampan was born in a Central Travancore village called Chalamkode at Ernakulam to M.K. Janardanan Thampan and T. Lakshmikutty Amma belongs from Mattathil Tharavadu a well known ruling family at Thodupuzha under Travancore Royal family. He is the great-grandson of sarvadhikari' Elasamprathi Narayanamenon of Travancore, a well known administrator of the Central Travancore region as Elasamprathi (representative of His Highness Maharaja) appointed by Maharaja of Travancore. Mr. Thampan studied at Government UP School Thondikkuzha and he attended high school at St.George’s Higher Secondary School Muthalakodam, he obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from St. Thomas College Palai of Kottayam District in Kerala. He went on to win a scholarship to study at Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam and earned a master's degrees in Polymer Chemistry at the age of 22 from the School of Chemical Education Kottayam. During his college days, he was an active member of the NCC Naval unit and awarded Best Cedet Trophy. He was selected to participate the prestigious Republic Day parade at New Delhi in 2001. During his Post Graduation he was selected as a Commissioned Officer in the prestigious Indian Navy by Union public Service Commission of India through a Combined Defence Services Examination (CDSE). The same time Mr. Thampan was selected for an overseas Post Graduate Programme in Management in the United Kingdom and left his Midshipman training from INS Mondovi Naval Officers Training Academy, Goa. Later Mr. Thampan obtained his Masters in Business Administration from the Middlesex College, London. He obtained another master's degree in Human Rights and Development Management from the Open University UK. Soon after the masters he obtained a Criminology and Criminal Justice diploma from the prestigious University of London and qualified as a Criminologist.[13]
Career in Defence[edit]
Mr. Thampan is the first and only person in the history of Kerala and Lakshadweep NCC directorate to received a best Navel Cadet Trophy (Nau-Sainik’ camp) from Shri. Atal Bihari Vajpayee the Hon,ble Prime Minister of India. He participated Indian Republic day parade as a Naval Cadet held at New Delhi in 26 January 2001.
Mr. Thampan is also a Microlight pilot (5 launches) who achieved its training from national adventure foundation of India at INS Kattabomman, Nanguneri, Tamil Nadu. He had his SCUBA diving course from Naval Diving School at INS Venduruthy Southern Naval Command, Cochi.[15]
He headed a team of Naval Cadets on board the Indian destroyer INS Ranvijay those who participate Operation Parakram,[16] an extraordinary situation at Arabian Sea after the attack of Indian Parliament.
