Ancient Ganja's necropolises and burial mounds are two cemeteries dating back to the 7-9th and 11-13th centuries, being located on the territory of the Ancient Ganja. As a result of the archaeological excavations conducted by Iskhak Jafarzade in 1939, it was established that the Ancient Ganja necropolis is located on the area where the burial mounds of an older period are placed. [1] These burial mounds, being distributed throughout Azerbaijan, are more compactly located at the foothills of the Lesser Caucasus, on the Mil and Mugan plains, and also, to a lesser extent, at the foothills of the Greater Caucasus. [2][3]

I.Jafarzade wrote that the creation of the second burial row on the ancient graves of barrow type, dating back to the era of Nizami Ganjavi (12th century), may indicate that this territory had some kind of cult significance. [2] The cultural stratification, similar to the one of the Ancient Ganja necropolis, is also observed in the Khojaly burial mounds located between the cities of Aghdam and Khankendi, as well as in the Garaagajly cemetery between Aghdam and Askeran. [2]

I. Jafarzade noted that the inhabitants of the Ancient Ganja continued to bury their deceased close people on the territory where the representatives of the previous generations who lived on these lands were buried. [2] In 1938–1939, 3 mounds and 6 graves were discovered and carefully studied on the territory of the cemetery. [2]
