Ansar Hassan (Urdu: انصر حسن‎, born Ansar Mahmood Mughal (Urdu: انصر محمود مغل‎) on 13 August 1968 in Mandi Bahauddin) is a Pakistani Urdu poet and writer. 'Hassan' is his pen name, (in Urdu takhalus تخلص).[1]

Early life and career[edit]

Ansar Hassan was born in Thatta Alia, a small town of Mandi Bahauddin district to Ahmed Khan Mughal. After matriculation, he moved to Islamabad. He studied in Allama Iqbal Open University and received Masters in Urdu. He also studied Persian and Arabic languages.

During his college life, the progressive poet Akhtar Usman was his best friend, who impressed him and became one of his role models. Ethnically a Punjabi, Ansar Hassan studied Persian and Urdu languages.


According to him, he has been writing from 1985. After moving to Islamabad in 1990, he did a private job for a year after which he got a government job in PNCU, an institute affiliated with UNESCO. He was also introduced in literary circles of Islamabad performing in mushairas. "On an occasion, when he was leaving the stage after reciting his ghazals, Iftikhar Arif asked him to recite the ghazal again which he liked the most. Hassan said, after listening this I turned back to the stage and recite the ghazal again". Though he basically writes in Urdu, he also writes in Punjabi language.

Personal life[edit]

Ansar Hassan has been married and has four children, two sons Irfan Haider (born June 16, 2001) and Qammar Abbas (born December 15, 2002), and two daughters Farwa Batool (born August 1, 2003) and Waseela Zainab (October 22, 2008).

He has a great influence of Khalid Ahmad and Akhtar Usman, with whom he is also a good friend, in his poetry. His other close friends include Shahab Safdar and Ali Akbar Natiq.
