Barton are a fictional football team in the Bristish comic Champ. It first appeared in 1983-84 in the We are United strip. Club’s nickname is The Eagles.
History
The club won the 4 league titles with the first being in 1903. Last title was the League Cup in 1970. For the first half of the 1970s Barton dominated English football: 1970 League Cup, 1971 and 1975 FA Cup, 1973 league. But since then Barton have struggled. They dropped into the Second Division in 1976 and took them 8 years to return. In 1983/84 they won promotion with United (4 points up from United with 2 wins over them with 2-0). They had conceded only 27 goals in 37 games, the best record in the second division (by 28/04/84), a superb defence marshalled by ex England sweeper Colin Thomson.
Barton were an opponent for Riverton United, playing in the First Divsion in 1984/85. Danger man was veteran winger Alex Speedy Brady and free-scoring striker Jim Gardiner in 84/85. By January 1985 they both have scored 22 goals. In 83/84 they had scored 30 goals.
