Book 1[1] is the upcoming sixth studio album by Canadian electronic musician Grimes. Moving away from the darker themes and sounds present on Miss Anthropocene, it instead features influences from techno and club music.[2] It is Grimes' first album since leaving independent label 4AD and her first on a major label, Columbia Records, a subsidiary of Sony Music. Book 1 was announced on December 3, 2021; a release date is yet to be announced.

Background and release[edit]

During the release cycle for Grimes' previous studio album, Miss Anthropocene, Grimes had revealed in an interview with Zane Lowe that she had already been finished working on it for some months before its release and had already started working on its follow-up, with the techno-pop track "Violence" being intended for Book 1 despite ultimately appearing on Miss Anthropocene.[2][3] After the release of her previous album, Grimes ended her contract with independent record label 4AD and announced that she was signed to major label Columbia Records on May 9, 2021.[4]

On January 18, 2021, Grimes responded to a fan on Twitter that she was "finishing [the] record and making the visuals".[5] Later, on January 30, 2021, American rapper Lil Uzi Vert revealed via Twitter that he was collaborating with Grimes.[6] Grimes later teased a collaboration with fellow Canadian artist The Weeknd.[7]

On May 31, 2021, Grimes shared a small video on Instagram of an unnamed track being "tested" by British DJ Chris Lake that featured her vocals. On June 17, 2021, Grimes teased a small snippet of a track called "Shinigami Eyes" in a livestream on her Discord server and announced that she would be creating a podcast with Liv Boeree called Homo Techno - a portmanteau of homo sapiens and technology.[8] The title of "Shinigami Eyes" is a reference to the Death Note manga series and was speculated by media outlets to be a tongue-in-cheek reference to a non-existent eye surgery Grimes claimed to have received in 2020.[9][10] A month later Grimes shared a snippet of a song called "100 Percent Tragedy" on TikTok, claiming her label thought it couldn't be a single.[11][12][13]

Book 1 is a loose concept album. It was described by Grimes as a "space opera" centred around two female artificial intelligence beings named "Claire de Lune" and "Dark Matter". Grimes described the album's narrative as being about the engineer who invented artificial intelligence using "his dream girl" Claire de Lune to "re-live his life" through her, in hopes of being taught how "to love" so that he could choose to "preserve humanity ... rather than let them fade into obscurity". The antagonist named "No One" attempts to combat this by introducing "troll A.I. puppets to wreak havoc", of which the character Dark Matter is the "black swan" to Claire de Lune; despite being pitted as enemies, Claire de Lune and Dark Matter "fall into a lesbian romance due to the fact that they are the only two fully A.I. beings in this universe". The elaborate concept picked up much attention from publications,[14][15][16] with several being baffled by the concept.[17][18][19]

Comparing the concept to the "big ideas" of Miss Anthropocene that she "let ... be more impressionistic", Grimes discussed in an interview with Billboard that she was "trying to make it [the narrative of the album] air-tight". Grimes also revealed that, while there was a completed album before signing to Columbia Records, changes had to be made due to her and the label "debating on the singles". Grimes also discussed the creation of her own Discord server to interact with her fans directly, noting how her team and herself were having "problems with trolls and fake news and haters" on Twitter, especially deriding cancel culture and that her fans were being "bullied and harassed" for liking her.[20][21]

On July 26, 2021, Grimes' appearance at Splendour in the Grass' 2021 online festival "Splendour XR", originally billed to be the debut of an "A.I. girl group",[22] was instead a DJ set that was streamed for free via her Discord server, causing outrage among people who paid for the show.[23][24] During the set, Grimes premiered the song "100 Percent Tragedy" which garnered media attention when Grimes described it as being about "having to defeat Azealia Banks when she tried to destroy my life", referring to a feud the pair had in 2018.[25][26] Grimes also premiered "Shinigami Eyes", "Utopia", "Player of Games"[27][28], and an early version of what would go on to become "A Drug from God", produced by Chris Lake with Grimes credited as "NPC", the name of the A.I. girl group that she had planned to launch earlier in the year.[29]

On October 1, 2021, Grimes released a preview of a song called "Love", described on her TikTok account as being "in response to all the bad vibes on the internet".[30] Grimes elaborated on Instagram,[31] noting that it was specifically about "the privacy invasion, bad press, online hate and harassment by paparazzis [sic] I’ve experienced this week." Later, Grimes claimed she would be "changing [her] main day job after Book 1", stating that the music industry is "reliant on archaic systems" and that "celebrity culture is suffocating as f [sic]".[32]

When "Shinigami Eyes" was released on January 26, 2022, Grimes announced that she would release an extended play titled Fairies Cum First as a "prelude" to Book 1. Grimes also revealed that Book 1 will be a double album.[33]

Singles[edit]

"A Drug from God" was released on November 12, 2021. The song was originally played on a DJ mix via Grimes' Discord server and thus speculated to be a part of the upcoming album, but instead features Grimes credited as "NPC", officially launching the A.I. girl group project Grimes had been teasing throughout 2021.[34]

The first official single from the album, "Player of Games" was first included in the soundtrack for season 5 of the video game Rocket League[35] before being released to streaming on December 3, 2021.[36] A music video directed by Anton Tammi - known for producing several videos for fellow Canadian artist The Weeknd - was released on December 22, 2021, featuring Grimes engaged in various fights with a "video game-like boss" named "Dark King",[37] played by Andrei Pishchalnikov.[38][39]

The second official single from Book 1 - and first from the Fairies Cum First EP - "Shinigami Eyes", was originally made available to pre-save on July 23, 2021,[40] and was released on January 26, 2022, alongside a series of promotional in-game items for Rocket League.[41][42] The music video features Jennie from Blackpink. Remarking on the song's meaning in an interview with Zane Lowe, Grimes stated that it "has no deeper meaning" and that is "the label-executive-decision song".[43]
